This updated guide communicates the essentials of an effective college visit as well as websites appropriate for today's high school student. The authors suggest helpful websites such as collegeconfidental.com and collegeprowler.com for students. There is much more than valuable tips for interviews. The Schneiders offer thoughtful questions for students to ponder as they learn about themselves and thus how they can present their best selves in an interview. A special section for the shy student is unique and worthwhile too.

Parents, students and professionals will find this a very useful and valuable book.

This book contains very basic information and designed for parents and kids who don't really understand the college application process. One chapter is called, " How to read a College Catalog" 8th graders and Freshman students who are early in the college search would most benefit by reading this book. If your Ivy league material, I doubt you need this book.
The book itself, is written in a straight forward, simple, clear and concise, many pages are checklists with bullet formating. My high school freshman daughter who was clueless about how to pick a college used the book as a guide. We found it helpful and worth the money.

This book is excellent!

Best use: preparing for interviews.
The interview section is pure genius. This book helps you plan out what you want to convey about yourself, and it also leads you to questions that will not only impress your interviewer, but will also give you real insight into the school they represent. Every interviewer I had commented on how they enjoyed my questions! This book provides you with a list of possible questions to choose from, and you can pick the ones most relevant to you and edit them to your needs. This really will help you organize your thoughts. If you're nervous about interviews, pick this up!

This new edition provides practical advice and information on visiting colleges, performing college searches, when to visit, college visit follow-up and more. I am an educational consultant and recommend that all of my students/families read this book. It is a valuable resource and a great read for every high school student involved in the college search and selection process. Thank you Ms. Schneider for this new edition. I appreciate your thorough research!

The book has a few generic attempts to add website info to the 1987 edition, but it remains terribly inadequate. A complete rewrite would have been a much better idea!

It still contains extremely bad advice, such as Chapter 16, "Questions to Ask your Interviewers", where it suggests asking:

- How would you characterize the majority of students?
If we're talking an alumnus interviewer who graduated 10 years ago, how could they possibly answer this
with any degree of accuracy??

- What region do the majority of students come from?
All the popular college guides (Barron's, US News) give the percentage of students from each region of the US
and abroad. And most of the college websites give this info as well. Why would you ask a question that any
simpleton should have known before showing up for the interview, and that the interviewer won't have
memorized in numerical detail to answer you?

- What are the percentages of students from cities, suburbs, rural areas, and small towns?
Some college websites give this type of info, but whether the website does or not, how in the world could
you expect the interviewer to have such detailed figures memorized just in case you'd ask this question?

- What religious clubs are on campus? Do they conduct activities?
The colleges all pretty much have comprehensive lists online of their clubs for religious groups,
minorities, and every special interest. Their activities are usually detailed on the web pages as well.
Why would you ask a question that shows you've been too lazy to peruse that section of their website
before this interview?

- What percentage of the student body is comprised of minorities?

This is a book that you'll want to purchase. Most college books you can read and remember, but this is one that you need to have in your possession when you take that college visitation trip. The book is packed full of great information, not just pertaining to visits and interviews. It appears that the College Board asked the author, who is experienced when it comes to college admissions, to write a book on the topic of visits and interviews and instead she wrote an all-encompassing book about how to select a college, visit and interview. There were loads of helpful hints in this book. Maybe there are some ideas that are better than others, but I found plenty of great ideas in this book to make purchasing it worthwhile. I've read maybe ten college books and so far I'd purchase two of them. This is book number two.
