Cathy Spagnoli's Asian Tales and Tellers is an excellent book. I sincerely enjoyed her book as her tales cover a wide spectrum of Asian cultures with a multitude of themes that any reader be it young or old can relate to. Furthermore, the authenticity of each tale can be measured by the detailed bibliography that follows at the end. Moreover Cathy Spagnoli's tales are so skillfully told that it is easy to pick up the book and imagine yourself in the world created by the tale. What is also useful about this book are the anecdotes, and the information that precedes the tales such as the storyteller's tools and styles. A truly relishable piece of work!

Alright, so I don't mean to be negative but I found some flaws with this one. My flaws are based totally on the fact that I am reading for pleasure and entertainment - NOT as someone who would use the book as a teaching tool.

And therein, is the problem. About 1/3rd of the book is not made up of text for the actual stories but rather it is focused on very educational-like notes regarding story-telling technique, historical data, and so on. Some of it is worth reading once perhaps, yet some of it not at all.

Now I DO recognize value in having notes on an interesting story - because sometimes the notes themselves are interesting. But rarely do I find that to be what is going on here. Rather, most of the information is extraneous or not at all insightful enough.

I admire what the author has done overall because some of this WOULD be good in say, a classroom setting - but pleasure readers need to be understanding beforehand.

As to the actual stories themselves - they are a very mixed bag. I would say I only really liked about half of the them. However! - I would say that one of my new favorites of all-time is within - which is awesome!

To conclude - don't get me wrong, I think people should try this - especially folktale junkies - but just be wary of the points I made as you go about deciding which books to prioritize when for your purchasing/borrowing decisions.

This is a very fun little book. Most stories are no more than two pages long so it is great for sneaking a quick story while you wait somewhere. I would highly recommend this book.

What a great collection to read, to read aloud, to share. A lovely variety of tales. I have gone back to this book again and again. Cathy is excellent. Check out her wonderful CD:Tales in Two Voices: Uguisu Hime
