"Catholic And College Bound" by George R. Szews
ACTA Publications, Skokie, ILL 2008.

This is a small excellent book, which, despite its title, is more about college experiences and less about Catholicism. This is good. This is also interesting since the author, George R. Szews, is a Roman Catholic priest with an extensive background in college counseling. The author has divided this book, of 64 pages, into five sections, each section with a "Challenge" and an "Opportunity". Of the five sections, four sections present challenges and opportunities in dealing with your classmates, your courses, and college in general. In four of the five sections, Catholicism shows up like a commercial on TV: an exhortation to go to Mass here and there. The sections are very well written and to the point. For example, on page 54, the author states that you should deal with a problem concerning another person, "...with politeness, clarity, and a genuine desire to have the situation resolved in a timely manner." Politics, yes you can disagree. Baseball! Yes! The Yankees vs. the Red Sox. Yes argue! But classroom discussions and paper presentations , in particular, and college life, in general, would be so much easier if there had been "politeness, clarity, and a genuine desire to have the situation resolved. " A college/university is the place to listen quietly. It is readily apparent that Fr. Szews knows his stuff.

The first section, "The Practice And Knowledge Of Your Catholicism Will Be Tested", (pages 7-10), could truly be entitled, "CCD Don't Cut It". Many (most?)Catholics start college with a minimal knowledge of their Faith; their last CCD instruction was in the ninth or perhaps tenth grade. CCD was good place to learn your basic prayers and the Ten Commandments.Read more ›

I bought this book to go in with my Godson's graduating gift. As a standalone gift it would have been disappointing, but in conjunction with a few other things it was a great idea for a Godson.

I read this book to see if it would be good to give the graduating seniors in my youth ministry. It did a great job explaining the college experience for a Catholic! I could definitely relate from my experiences!
