The composer who invented the Broadway Musical, at a time when Reviews were popular. A very controversial subject at a time when Jim Crow (1926) was rampant. Story with social content, all performers had to sing, dance and act. Very long for its time and the audience left without clapping, said nothing as they exited the theatre, and Kern and Hammerstein thought they had a flop on their hands, but the next day, the reviews were ecstatic and "Showboat" was a success. He was invited to write the music and lyrics for "Annie Get You Gun," by Rogers and Hammerstein, but died of a heart attach while walking down 5th Ave. A has been composer, Irving Berlin, completed the score and had a smash hit on his very old hands,

Now if this hasn't been an intriguing educational lesson. I have discovered songs I had no idea Jerome Kern composed. Fascinating song book. Most of the songs are easy within a short period of time. Some pieces take a bit longer for me to play - especially those ones I haven't heard before. But I do like this song book, and have enjoyed playing from it. Print could be darker or the fonts a little larger.

This collection of Kern's songs is very nicely produced in large format, perfect for use at the piano or music stand. it is nicely illustrated with photos and some of the songs are accompanied by anecdotes which are both informative and entertaining.

I'm an old time musician, who is still active in music, and appreciate the American Songbook. Jerome Kern is right up there with Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, etc. as one of the greatest songwriters this country has ever produced. This is a collection of his work that I'm most happy to own.

I ordered this for my Mom, who is 86 and loves the old Broadway songs and
hits by famous musical authors. She was thrilled with the book and was able to
either play the songs on her piano (she has a Yamaha Clavinova) and sing along
or just have the piano play the song from a memory stick and she can sing.
It was exactly what I was looking for and includes many famous standards.
You will love this book...and they are becoming very hard to get. So order order
today if you want something like this.
