This collection of inspiring true stories is about some of the many dogs that the author has known throughout her life. Each of the eleven well written stories draws the reader in and brings the dogs to life. The stories range from the compassionate to gripping adventure. Many of the stories show the heroic and courageous efforts of the author's beloved dogs on their exciting adventures in Alaska and the Arctic.

Through sharing her adventures and friendships with the dogs the author brings the reader to an understanding of what dogs are capable of and what they can teach us. The author conveys her deep insight into dogs by clearly describing their personalities and character traits. This combined with the author's remarkable skill at telling stories makes for a fascinating and enjoyable read.

The black and white illustrations are expressive and engaging complementing the text. An introduction, pronunciation guide, and glossary are included.

The book offers many opportunities for a variety of rich discussions in classrooms and reading groups. Some of the topics include bullying, teamwork, friendship, compassion, acceptance, and forgiveness.

I highly recommend this book for school and public libraries. It would also be a fine addition to a personal collection. Although dog lovers will relish these stories, this book is for anyone who enjoys well told stories with memorable characters.

Right from the start, this collection of eleven suspenseful, heart-warming, thrilling, and thought-provoking true stories of amazing dogs by accomplished author and dog musher Pam Flowers will have readers of all ages on the edge of their seats. Over the years, Flowers completed the Iditarod, crossed the Arctic, and journeyed to the Magnetic North Pole, all in the company of unforgettable dogs. She and her dogs braved frigid temperatures, polar bears, and melting sea ice. She also observed dogs work through various issues and personality quirks which ultimately made them exceptionally memorable. Flowers learned something from every dog and all their experiences together. Her detailed yet down-to-earth storytelling makes this enjoyably accessible, especially by reluctant readers or when used as a read-aloud. A glossary of related terms is included to help readers unfamiliar with dog mushing or expeditionary terminology. The simple pen and ink illustrations capture the essence of each story and a playful pup announces each new chapter. Dog lovers will lap this up and for all others, it's a must-read. ---Dorothy Hall-Riddle, School Librarian, Maine

I'm a long-time fan of Pam Flowers' achievements and her books. But the day I found this new one had been strenuous, so I figured I'd just read a little. 92 pages later, I simply had to stop and go to sleep. Respect for the dogs of whom she writes is obvious in every story. She's a straight-forward story-teller who writes with humor, emotion and insight. She shows clear examples of dog loyalty to each other, as well as to humans; bravery; friendship; grit and ability to reason and problem-solve. Skillfully woven into the stories are good life lessons, which don't hit the reader over the head. She's obviously a keen observer of dogs, and she encourages the reader to pay more attention to the dogs in their own lives. All that and a great read, too.

I am a huge fan of Pam Flowers, and I knew I was going to love this book. Pam has the most eloquent style of writing that allows the reader to feel as though they are actually living the book. I felt as though I was taking part of the adventures with her and her furry friends. This book is a must read for everyone. I could not put it down once I started reading. If you have not read Alone Across the Arctic I would recommend you read that book as well.

I very much enjoyed reading this lovely and charming book about dogs generally and sled dogs specifically. Between the lines, one is able to learn a satisfying amount about the extraordinary arctic explorer, Pam Flowers. She also writes about the Iditarod Sled dog Race and some of the adventures she and her dogs share along the way. Each story ends with a gentle life lesson she has learned through her dogs about forgiveness, bravery, bullying, etc. Easily readable in less than two hours, it would be ideal and interesting for young adults as well as adults. Indeed, my eleven year-old neighbor boy is really enjoying reading it currently!

I was lucky enough to communicate with author/musher/adventurer/presenter/rock star last year as I scheduled her to visit my school as part of March Is Reading Month. I read plenty of reviews before asking her to come, none of them were off base in any way. Sorry, back to Ordinary Dogs, Extraordinary Friendships: Stories of Loyalty, Courage, and Compassion :) I have been constantly amazed at how well Pam truly KNOWS her dogs!! Compared to her, I have NO CLUE as to why my dogs do what they do!! Ordinary Dogs is a great way to show my students that dogs, whatever label you put on them, are individuals with individual personalities and ways of doing things. Tomorrow, I will share the chapter "The Bully" with my 5th grade students. Today we attended an anti-bullying assembly and "The Bully" entry will make a great connection!!
