I've tried other pool instruction books, but they never really helped me to improve my game. Then I got this one. Schneider makes everything so simple and clear that after just a few short months I am now playing at a whole new level. My friends can't believe some of the shots I make. Banking, kicking, even combinations . Plus, they can't figure out how after making one shot, I always seem to be perfectly set up for the next one. (That's thanks to the chapter on Position Play.)

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a better pool player.

If you want to only buy one book, this would be it. If you want a second, I'd highly suggest "The 99 Critical Shots in Pool".

Ron Schneider's book covers all of the basic and most intermediate methodology needed to improve your game.
It's great.
But...

I would have liked to see more practice drills included.

There a few confusing pages that could have been illustrated better.

All of the explanations are a bit verbose. For example, if "firm hit" and "one tip left english" were bolded, shots would be much easier to refer to when practicing.

Another example on page 55 shows that hitting the cue ball from the 1st diamond on the short rail to the 1st diamond on the long rail, the cue ball will go to the 5th diamond on the opposite rail (which is correct). But then on page 61, the same shot goes one diamond less, into the side pocket. It say to use a 'firm' hit, but attempting this shot you'll see just how 'firm' of a shot you need and how much easier it may be for you to use one tip of left english or even one tip of draw which are options not included.

The shots on pages 59 and 78 are the same and could have been discussed as one concept as opposed to two shots. The "parallel shift" of the cue stick is, in my opinion, needlesssly complicated and is only useful as a conceptual tool. If you were to lay out your cue from the corner pocket as suggested, then the distance (running parallel along the table) from the cue stick to the cue ball is equal to the distance from the corner pocket to your correct aiming point. You can establish your point of aim without carefully moving your stick up and down the table and you wont look like such a dork. (Granted all that only makes sense when you see the book)

My point is only that there are a few rough points to the book. It's not perfect, but it's damn close to being The Best Damn Pool Instruction Book Period.

The Worst Damn Pool Instruction Book Period!!!!! Besides being disorganized and in many cases outright wrong, the text is filled with misspellings and grammar errors. How some could rate this book five star is beyond me. What junk! Don't buy.

I moved to a retirement community and was asked to teach Pool (Billiards) to fellow residents. Did it for one year and gave it up as the "students" were not up to the task of learning. Then the management got rid of the table. The book was very helpful both for me as a teacher and a player.

Excellent. Lots of interesting angles that I never thought about. Whether it will improve my game, however, is another thing. If not, it's my problem, not Schneider's. I highly recommend this book.

Great book! If you want to improve your game, this is the book to do it with. Love the "world of parallels"... my banking and kicking have improved immeasurably. Purchased as download so I can read from any device I'm logged in to. Very convenient then for me to refer to points of instruction on my smartphone while at the pool hall and do more in-depth study at home on my tablet. Once again, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to pocket more balls and win more racks.
