These short stories take place in the ethnic, racial, social melting pot of early Twentieth-Century New York. Train seems to enjoy the dynamic interplay of diverse customs, attitudes, and dialects--and prejudices too (not the author's but his characters'). The result is generally sympathetic and sometimes comedic--as in the case of the Chinese witness who will only swear to the truth on the head of a white rooster. Mr. Tutt seems to be at home in this hectic environment: at the end of one story, he finds himself happily dozing off, while clothed in silk garments brocaded with dragons, at a Chinese banquet given in his honor.

Mr. Tutt's genial tolerance for the denizens of New York sharply contrasts with the hostility he bears towards the real villains of these stories: the judges and prosecutors who would abrogate justice for the sake of their political ambitions.

By C. L Wilson on November 29, 2005
Format: Hardcover
Thoroughly delightful book about the goings-on in a law firm around 1920. Wryly humorous, at times full of wise discourse on the law and humanity, it is a far, far cry from Train's other books. Not a twinge of his preacherly manner. A real precursor to Perry Mason, or Poirot, complete with its Miss Wiggins (Della Street and Miss Lemon), Willie the office boy, and Bonnie Doon, the gumshoe of the outfit. Copmprised of seven short stories, the first two being murder cases, in which Mr.Tutt gets the murderer off in such a way that we agree with him. Of course, in the second instance, the murderer was promptly shot himself. But in the first, he was definitely guilty. There are a whole series of these books which were quite popular in their day, and I can see why. The courts in those times seem to have been much more lax in their procedures than nowadays.

The elderly Mr Tutt and his junior partner Tutt spend their time defending the downtrodden innocent (and occasionally the guilty - but they'll never admit it - at least to the judge) and making the most rascally prosecutors and lawyers look like the fools they are. A highly entertaining set of short stories, with many interesting legal tidbits (many of which, I suspect, no longer are true). The author was a lawyer himself, and has created the most interesting protagonist since the Saint (or more properly, before the Saint). Highly recommended.

Train offers here a fine set of stories about a caring and cantankerous lawyer from the turn of the century. Other books about Tutt include 'Tut,Tut, Mr. Tutt', 'Old Man Tutt' and the autobiographical, "Yankee Lawyer".

An interesting collection of short stories staring the NYC legal firm of Tutt and Tutt. They are not related, but both have the last name of Tutt. The senior partner is called Mr. Tutt, and generally does most of the court room work. Tutt is the junior partner who does most of the legal preparation and paperwork.

The stories address different point s of law from the early 1900s, but are probably still true, unless he law has changed in an area. Entertaining stories which work well a century later, about how the partners use the legal system to do true justice, as it should be done. In some instances, some of the other players are out the use the legal system to do good for themselves or their clients and not do true justice. Well written, and they seem to be legally sound.

Judge Harold R. Medina, U.S Court of Appeals, put it best in his introduction to "Mr. Tutt at his Best": "Mr. Tutt stories...fascinated me, as they did thousands of other young lawyers eager to believe that justice was not always at the mercy of prosecutors who wanted convictions, sometimes from motives that were none too pure, or of the large number of unscrupulous persons in various categories connected or not conneceted with the law, who seemed so often in real life to prevail over the righteous and the just...Mr. Tutt was my hero."

And is mine.

The stories are brilliantly clever, the law, accurate, and little has changed in the practice of the law in almost 100 years (Train began writing about his character in 1919 and continued until 1947).

Each story is centered on an arcane legal issue which Tutt either uses to his client's benefit or finds a way around in order to, usually, provide justice to those deserving of it.

Mr.Tutt was a character created by the author who was, himself a lawyer. Mr.Tutt appeared in stories in "The Saturday Evening Post", 20th Century America's most popular magazine. Mr.Tutt is a New York lawyer who champions the underdog and finds ways to exticate him from unfair legal entanglements by either applying or finding his way around some arcane legal point.

Train's portrayal of the legal system is as accurate today as it was 90 tears ago.

It's always a treat to read a story where the bad guy gets his comeupance, as usually occurs in these tales.

Tutt is the lawyer everyone wishes to retain.

I believe that this is the first of the Mr. Tutt books.
