I found this book to be a compelling page turner. The characters were complex and believable, the story one of redemption and rebirth. Much of what New Mexico is about. While there were some loose ends to the characters' lives, they were really peripheral. This is a book that fills you with hope about the greater community of man.

Frustrated Santa Fe artist, Whitney Slope, escapes the political games of the Santa Fe art world by heading into the mountain community of Mi Ojo ("My Eye"-a fictitious community representing the real communities that can be found around Santa Fe). He finds his soul in the authentic, rural community and his story is woven with that of his new landlord, Dominga Garcia de Jesus. Slope is brought to a refreshingly honest new way of life as he becomes involved in the stories of other people outside of the affluent community in Santa Fe.
The characters in this book are deep and well developed. The plot carries the reader through a world that is realistic to the area. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the Santa Fe art gallery community contrasted with the rural Hispanic communities in the mountains. The high quality of the writing and the storyline make this book a must read for anyone who is looking for an excellent work of Southwest fiction.

Blown Away! I really connected with these characters and their feelings about life. While it was set in the post Vietnam era, it could have been happening today. I particularly enjoyed the fact that there was a range of characters whose backgrounds and ages ranged from the very young to the very old; from the very wealthy to the poorest of poor. In the end this author put her finger on the fact that we are all seeking connection to what really matters in life and that while life is far from perfect, we can take heart that our loses are part of the living experience. Community – family and friends come together to bolster each other in times of sorrow and celebrate in times of joy- Life’s miracles. 5 stars I’d give it 6 if I could.

I'm a displaced New Mexican and right now I'm reading this wonderful book. It hovers somewhere between deep love and the kind of misery that homesickness can produce. I can see the landscapes in her words, smell the chili and tortillas and feel the heat of the sun-drenched land. I'm missing my beloved home and this book both brings me comfort and sorrow (that I'm not there). Rarely does a writer capture the magic and mystique of the Land of Enchantment. Her characters are truly believable, warm and entirely human. Their faults and favors are common to all of us, their ability to overcome them is also common to all of us if we visit our own canyons of remembering. Highly recommended and I'll be purchasing a copy or two (for gifts) as soon as I finish writing this.

When I finished reading Lesley Kempes’ second novel BONE HORSES, I thought, wow, storytelling can’t get any better than this. And then I read her first novel CANYON OF REMEMBERING, and I’m left with a feeling of gratitude. Gratitude that I’m the lucky reader on the receiving end of a precious gift. A gift that has the power not only to entertain but also to heal.

Lesley Kempes writes stories that feed the soul. Her characters invite you into their world, and once you’ve given into their power, you are a little sad to leave when the journey is over. But in a way it never ends. Days, weeks, even months after reading her fiction, her story people appear out of nowhere, and you find yourself wanting to travel back to those places in the stories and relive each scene over and over. I especially felt this as I finished reading the last scenes in CANYON OF REMEMBERING. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Whitney, Dominga, Atencio, Persimilion, Pepe, Alfredo, Padre Leo, the cats, or to the red mesas and deep arroyos that call to the lost and weary... to the cynics in all of us…to come home.

Kathleen M. Rodgers ~ author of the novel JOHNNIE COME LATELY.

this book had me mesmerized - Poling-Kempes has absolutely captured the quality of light in that magical part of the country, the wonderful community there and the challenges the community continues to face. I would also like to suggest her new book, Bone Horses, as another must read and am waiting impatiently for her next book which is apparently in the works.

It has been a long time since I have read any part of a novel through a few tears. What a beautiful book. I almost went back to the
beginning to read it all over again, and may. The characters are achingly finely drawn, and set in the northern New Mexico milieu
that has inspired so many to create so much. Read it when you have a lot of good time.

This book is about all of these, and so much more. Leslie makes both the people and the landscape come alive for the reader.
