The North American B-25 Mitchell bomber was THE Allies' pre-eminent medium bomber, serving in all theaters of war with a variety of Allied air forces. Squadron/Signal's uber-prolific author David Doyle offers up an 80-page, color guide to this venerable warhorse in B-25 MITCHELL WALK AROUND, a 2012 S/S release.

Though Mitchells were produced in a variety of models, Doyle's book concentrates its photography on B-25D, B-25H and B-25J models. Each of the three models is given nose-to-tail photo coverage with tons of close-up shots and air-to-air pix as well. With the exception of one or two wartime b&w photos, all images are in color and depict surviving Mitchell warbirds. Don Greer contributes five color side-profiles and Melinda Turnage chips in several line drawings of fuselage sections, etc.

Previous WALK AROUND volumes have featured a mix of vintage and contemporary photographs, an arrangement I prefer over the all-contemporary shots approach but that's just me.

If you're a B-25 buff and are looking for comprehensive photo coverage of Mitchell's famous medium, David Doyle's book is just what the doctor ordered. Recommended.

My grandfather absolutely loved this book. He was a pilot in WWII and flew a B-25 Mitchell. He was delighted to have his memories confirmed with many illustrations and descriptions. There were several different models (he flew more than one), and the book does a good job of highlighting the differences. I wish it was a more substantial book (hardback, or at least a little less floppy--it feels like a child's book). But the content is great and perfect for anyone with familiarity with the plane.

Being an avid airplane modeler for the past 40yrs. I always look for the best reference around. This book is one of them. There are still some B-25's still flying, and all of the pictures in this book were taken from them, so the photos are very accurate, I highly recommend this book

A very detailed look at the North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber of World War II. The book goes well beyond the famous Doolittle Raid in 1942 to show how this versatile airplane was used in every theater of war for many purposes. Most notably, although classified a medium bomber, the B-25 was most effective as a ground/surface attack strike aircraft. Includes use by many foreign countries and little known use by USMC in Pacific.

If you are familiar with the highly popular Walk Around series from this publisher, you will be completely at home with this fine book. Fortunately there are many airworthy B-52 Mitchells remaining and more in musuems, so the author had numerous examples to photograph. As with the other books in this series, the photographs are excellent: sharp, well-composed and with good exposure. The captions accompanying the photographs do a good job of explaining what the reader is seeing. The artwork, both on the covers and the color profiles inside, all are of the high standard that has come to be expected in this series.

The only reason that I gave this book four stars instead of five is that the book would have benefited from a few full-page page images of different parts of the interior, taken with a wide-angle lens. There are several interior photos that to me were difficult to understand exactly what I was seeing and where it was located, because of the lack of context. Some larger photos taken with a wide angle lense would have solved that problem.

Overall, this is a high-quality publication at a reasonable price. If the subject matter interests you, you should definitely buy it. Better yet, buy it with its companion volume in the In Action series B-25 Mitchell in Action - Aircraft No. 221. For less than $40, you can have a detailed understanding of this important aircraft of World War II.
