I would call this brilliantly researched book essential reading for all adults. Why? Because if you know 100 people, chances are that you know between one and four sociopaths, those people who trample all over you without remorse. They use you up and spit you out like a peach pit that’s had all the fruit sucked off it--and never lose a moment’s sleep while doing so. Your confusion and broken heart mean nothing to them. The only thing that matters is their own best self-interest. They are people without a conscience. They feel no shame.

This is an academic work and yet very readable. It is short enough to get through quickly yet long enough to cover the topic.

The book starts off by explaining the problem that the everyday sociopath causes in society. Whether it’s the workplace, in romance, or in your family, it is essential to recognize who this person is. The authors go into traits and gender differences.

My favorite part of the book is the chapter that explains how sociopaths need and use people who are empathic (normal, caring people) and apathetic (the enablers). These three personality types form a triad. I found this to be eye-opening and empowering. The authors also explain “gaslighting,” that crazy-making thing sociopaths do to make you doubt yourself and drive you crazy.

Also essential is the knowledge on how to cope with a sociopath. What do you do after you’ve been devastated? How do you recover? And then to prevent that from ever happening again, how do you establish boundaries? How do you deal with bullying in the workplace? All of these questions are answered, and case histories are provided so that you learn how others have coped.

Written in clear and simple language, "The Sociopath at the Breakfast Table et. al." encapsulates and renders accessible what are usually very complicated psychological terms and relational paradigms. Dr. Jayne McGregor and Tim McGregor, together, have put their clinical practice to work for those in the wider community by offering this brief, but valuable guide to understanding, identifying, and healing from "sociopathic" or otherwise anti-social personalities.

Whether such types are found in your work place, social circle or family, there are ways of detecting what their specific pathological and unusual behaviors are, how they tend to operate outwardly and inwardly, and how their behaviors and beliefs complicate and pollute communications and triangulate relationships between immediate and extended family members as well as between their "targets" and social contacts.

This guide includes moving testimony by survivors of sociopathic abuse, as well as sober recommendations on how to establish healthy boundaries with abusers, and approaches to recovery from long-entrenched connection to them. It also offers a very helpful EQ (Emotional Quotient) test as well as a list of British and international organizations and mental health resources for those who need further assistance.

Overall, this is a must read for anyone in an abusive relationship, those interested in psychology and/or needing practical advice on removing the sociopath from his or her life and protecting children from harm and generational pain.

This is more like an overview of sociopathic behavior. The more interesting book is, "The Sociopath Next Door".with it's many examples of encounters with these soulless creatures. Fascinating and cautionary.....read these books and take whatever steps necessary to avoid these creatures. Know your enemy or suffer the consequences. Makes me wonder how many of this ilk go into politics...given the state of the world today. Is there an epidemic of this lack of conscience? If so we are in for a permanent state of chaos. What do you do....with "humans" who do not care a wit about their fellow man? How does the kindly man protect himself from these ruthless jackles? And as the world fills up with this type....."Revelations" will look like a hallmark card.

This book is very good at describing the social dynamics these people use. Unfortunately, it ends before getting to any useful explanations of coping mechanisms the rest of us can use to deal with them. If you like a good scare with no resolution, this book is for you.

I was married to one for 11 years and by the time I finally got away from him, my life was totally wrecked and still is. Just wanted to see what is said about recognizing a sociopath. I now live across the street from one who within a month of moving here, has gone around to all the neighbors slandering and accusing me of what she does to me. Can't win. Planning to move again. I have read over 35 books of this type and not one has everything a person needs to know to avoid being hurt by them, whatever name you give it.
