This is the ultimate treatise on cognitive therapy in a substance abuse setting. Straight from the father of cognitive therapy, "Cognitive Therapy of Substance Abuse" is a clear, concise guide to providing effective therapy in both outpatient and inpatient settings. It is an indispensible part of any substance abuse counselor's library.

I bought this book because I had been out of college/my Counseling major for over 20 years. This book was VERY beneficial for helping me to review my terms and the theory behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The Chapter lay-outs were also well thought out in that they provided me with an easy transition/smooth flow of information pertinent to my needs. Definitely a well written book.

This book is a foundational work. Be advised that it is not casual reading but is more like a textbook. This work has spawned many take offs and add ons, but for my money going right to the source is best. There is certainly material in here that can be put to immediate use.

BECK AND THE GORSKI CENAPS MODEL

I have been working in the field of addiction psychotherapy since 1969 and was exposed to the work of Dr. Beck in the areas of both depression and substance abuse early in my career. He was a professional model in the clarity in which he expressed how the princes of cognitive therapy can be specifically applied to the treatment alcoholism and drug dependence. The book Cognitive Therapy of Substance Abuse has been on my shelf of important references since I purchased it in 1993. Since that time I have had the privilege of developing an evidence-based model for addiction treatment, the GORSKI-CENAPS MODEL, which was built, in part, upon the foundation of Dr. Beck's work.

This book is a must read for therapists and clients alike. It presents a thorough explanation of the mechanics and the employment of CBT as it relates to substance abuse. The authors extract dialogue from real counseling sessions to give the reader concrete examples of how CBT can be used to strengthen the problem-solving and coping skills that will guide the client through the process of recovery.

Great book for the "father" of cognitive therapy. Perfect copy from the Amazon seller. It's written to help therapists and I believe it to be a bit naive. If you're looking for ways to help yourself, you won't get much out of it.

One of the must-read classics in the field of addictions in general and CBT in particular. I am a doctor/therapist and I get back to this book from time to time.
