Product Description

Founded nearly 400 years ago, Boston has a revolutionary history that has established the city as New England's cultural and historic capital, a tradition that continues today. With its diverse mix of neighborhoods and historic paths such as the Freedom Trail, Boston lives up to its nickname as The Walking City. Here you can experience American history and fresh pasta in the North End, visit the shiny new waterfront and 50-acre greenway post-Big Dig, or wander the cobblestone streets to Henry David Thoreau's house in Beacon Hill--and it's all conveniently within walking distance. In this newest book from the award-winning series, writer and photographer Robert Todd Felton gives urban trekkers an insider's guide to all that Boston has to offer--from revolutionary war battlefields to a revolutionary art museum, and from the 200-year-old Haymarket to the chic boutiques of Newbury Street.

This two-color, portable guide features 36 walks, detailed maps for each trip, original photos, and critical public transportation information for every trip. Route summaries make each walk easy to follow, and a "Points of Interest" section summarizes each walk's highlights. Walk descriptions include trivia about architecture, local culture, and the city's rich history, plus tips on where to dine, have a drink, and shop.

5.0 out of 5 stars In and Off the Beaten Trail, October 21, 2008
By H. Pember (Pepperell, MA) - See all my reviews
I could not recommend this book more highly. If you love to walk, love history or love (or want to fall in love with) Boston this is the book for you. Boston is a fantastic city to walk but unless you are knowledgeable to the ins and outs of it you may find yourself beating the same old path. I was pleasantly surprised to find not only off the "beaten trail" walks but well organized themes, maps, historical details and even Mass. Transit information detailing easy ways to arrive at the starting point of the walks.
Having an over abundance of out of town guests we purchased "Walking Boston" in hopes of finding more than the standard walking fare and we found much more. Great book!
