This is an invaluable resource for anyone trying to muddle though the study of MSA. I had to get this book for Arabic 1 at Ohio State when I was taking classes there in HS, and now at my current university they don't make students get it. It helps so much when I try and work through lessons in Al Kitaab which as you know if you are taking Arabic in a formal setting is not the most clearly written language book ever. (Although I have heard that the new revised third edition is much more user friendly) The only problem with this book is that it transliterates, which is annoying especially with grammar issues. Why people still create Arabic resources without the script baffles me. They have a standard romanization in the front, but it is their own which is good to familiarize yourself with in order to get the most out of this otherwise great resource.

Their website even gives you correlations between grammar issues and where they're covered in Al Kitaab.

This book is very helpful by relating Arabic grammer to English grammer, and for explaining it in creative and different ways.

It is perhaps not fair of me to rate this a 2 when I haven't examined the book cover to cover. The simple fact is that I can't get into this book. How can you have a book which purports to teach you something important about the Arabic language when there is not a single word in the whole book in Arabic!! I left transliteration behind several years ago and now it confuses me to look at it; I'm sure it uses a different area of the brain than the Arabic symbols. You decide about this book. I will likely offer it for sale.

I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend who studies Arabic after I bought the German version for myself. She has found it extremely useful and all of the information is relevant to her studies. However, we were both very disappointed that the examples were not also written in an Arabic script besides the transliterated ones. This just causes confusion and it's almost shocking that a book for students of Arabic doesn't include any actual Arabic writing. However, the information is still very good and definitely a good value.
