While the subject matter of this book was of great interest to me, I found it to be so poorly written that it was unreadable; the prose is dull and redundant, there are numerous grammatical errors, and the information provided is utterly superficial. The same material is covered in much greater detail in H. w. Wilson's "Ironclads in action" (1895), a book of which this seems to be but a poor repetition. Even the graphics in Conway's "All the worlds ships 1860-1905" are far superior. If you are a serious scholar of naval history - or even a casual wargamer - find another book.

It is particulary good in its coverage of those ironclads in the service of other nations beyond the Royal Navy and the United States Navy. Contains well-done sections on the Seven Weeks War at sea, the wars of the South American Pacific coast including the Huáscar, and the Japanese Civil War.

This book initially struck me as a pleasant surprise. It read well through each of the first sections. Each section would first explain the war and naval objectives. The following chapters were organized as: A technical overview of the state of naval warfare and weapons at the time. The battles were in fairness well presented in an organized and complete manor. However no attempt is made to provide an analysis section. The American Civil War period is well covered. After this period it seems as though either the writer had to get the text to the publisher or has severely over extended his/her knowledge base. The book starts to breeze over battles and technical issues with little insight. I saw no value in reading the ladder 1/2. This book has little or nothing to offer. It is a waste of time and money. It is such a pity that a subject area as underdeveloped as the early iron/steel era (1860 to 1905) with its wild experimentations in ship design in amour, weapons, propulsion and even size is presented this way.
