Both Firestarter and Black Jack features a little girl, but that's where the similarities end. Manicka does what Stephen King could not do. The book begins with Dakota being tortured in a secret NSA facility, all with the purpose of turning her into an instrument of war they can control by psychologically implanting alters (like an alter-ego?) designed to control different parts of her and prevent the story of what she will be forced to do from getting out. This book has something for everyone, horror, suspense, conspiracy theory, mythology, it's a real page turner.

The character development, I thought, was very well done. You knew who these people were and what they liked/hated within a few short paragraphs and their actions backed it up. I also liked how the author doesn't pull stops on the imagination. She certainly has a wonderful knack for horror. This is NOT a horror however, but the elements were impressive for a horror-lover like myself. This book is labeled a Paranormal Metaphysical novel and/or Paranormal Fantasy but I'd have to disagree, this was a total Sci-Fi for me. There are scientific theories utilized throughout the book to give the novel some realism. Though, this may be where I found it hard to read. Manicka does try to break down the terminology using a character named Green. Unfortunately, these felt more like what I call "info-dumps", where an author writes out everything a reader should know in a textbook fashion. Every time Green showed up and said something like, "come with me" or "let me show you something..." I found myself cringing because I was in for several pages of a lecture rather than a story. If you're unfamiliar with the terms being used (as I was with several) it may be awkward and exasperating. Most of the time I just wanted to get back to to Dakota or Black Jack's stories.
There are several references to the movie, "The Matrix", which I didn't like. It made me start to compare the movie to her novel. I understand she was using it to help us grasp her concept but it made it look like a copy or fan-fic instead of an original idea.
I think that the author's writing style flows well and her characters are rich, but her sometimes wayward plot and numerous info-dumps had me not caring. At least until she dove back into the primary storyline and worked her magic. I think Sci-Fi fans would really enjoy this though. It really is a truly unique concept in viewing the modern world.

This is a critically acclaimed writer whose work touches the deepest part of mankind's soul. Her work is reasonably challenging to read and thought provoking.

However, this book drew me in from the beginning. I wasn't sure what to expect as I had never read her work before. This is my first time reading this author and I must admit I'm very impressed.

Having read her bio, this author brings a unique perspective to the world and this in itself only adds to the intrigue of her work. Perhaps intrigue would be an improper use of the word here, but the author shows great insight into the human condition.

This book explores the Archons that are supposedly mind parasites that have infected the human race. It will go against everything you have been taught thus far and turn religion and our school structure up-side-down. The book provides a very interesting alternative to the reality in which we exist in now.

A very interesting and recommended read.

Dakota and Black's story is highly original.
Although I do enjoy the novels about vampires and shape-shifters, it is refreshing to read a story I have never read a *version* of before.

This book is also very deep. If you can catch them, there are layers of different meanings hidden throughout.

Overall it was a really interesting, unique, and well written novel. Highly recommend

I find this novel very interesting but challenging and demanding in many aspects; primarily a reader needs to be resilient to quite explicit violent scenes involving children but if that is acceptable , a great science fiction follows. The story is easy to read with few great turns in the plot that is filed with great metaphors and paranormal thesis. I would recommend this book to all science fiction and paranormal lovers.

As a non-fiction writer, I usually have difficulty reading fiction novels -- especially ones that deal with the supernatural and paranormal. That was not the case with Black Jack!

Rani Manicka has gone beyond the typical supernatural storyline found in so many recent books and has written a very mesmeric story that causes the reader to want to know more with every turn of the page. With an intricate, gripping storyline and intense young characters, Black Jack is spellbinding -- sometimes disturbing story -- which will cause the reader to question and challenge the very core of their moral, religious and spiritual beliefs.
