It's almost the time of the year where we will all be spending more time indoors. For some of us it means spending more time reading and enjoying the books we accumulated over the summer.

I make no bones about being a fan of racing columnist and author Burt "B.S." Levy who lives in the near west suburbs of Chicago. Burt erratically shows up at motorsports events that are an easy drive from his home hawking his books, as well as stickers, artwork and clothing items related to the books.

Almost every one of Burt's novels has won an award of some sort- admittedly some of the awards are obscure, but they are honors by his peers none the less.

Very few people are writing motorsport-centric fiction these days because as one wag was noted to say "those people don't read". Burt goes the extra mile and puts his fictional characters in historically correct situations with historically correct real-life characters.

Some times the names are changed slightly to protect the innocent; EG: in the first books in the series "SCCA" was changed to "SCMA" but everyone with regularly firing synapses knows who and what he is referring to.

Late in the summer of 2010 the first softcover preview editions of Burt's latest book "The 200 MPH Steamroller" became available. I resisted the temptation to buy one of the early copies because all of the other books that I owned in the series were hardcover- I feel that there is something about keeping a set intact or whatever.

Now the hardcover books are available- even "personally defaced" with a message from Burt and a greasy thumbprint if you so desire. My copy came with a complementary racing sticker for fictional "Fairway Motors" boasting the slogan "Average cars for average people".

I own autographed hardbound copies of all of Burt "B.S." Levy's motor racing novels, and I have enjoyed them all... until now. While I love Burt's style and enthusiasm, this one suffers so much from poor editing that I really can't recommend it until it is subjected to a much more critical red pencil than Burt and his wife have applied. There are factual errors (e.g. Swedish driver Jo Bonnier is instead said to be Swiss), redundancies -- passages that show up twice (at least) with no variation (e.g. the description of the Lotus 18/21 in which Sterling Moss was injured at Goodwood) -- and continuity issues (e.g. there is a minor character whose name is first Geoff and then later James and then still later John, and Dan Gurney's Porsche spyder suddenly becomes a coupe during the Targa Florio). These lapses (and *far* too many typographical errors) make the book a very frustrating endeavor for somebody who is at all vigilant. Burt, if you'd like someone to go over the problems with you and help fix what's wrong, please give me a call. You know where I am, Buddy (pun intended).

The subject matter is good fun as the Fairway (Ford) Motor Company decides it wants to beat Ferrari at it's own game, taking on the Red Reign at LeMans. Part one hints at what's to come with the introduction of the Fairway Ferret (aka the Ford Mustang, and wouldn't "Fox" have been a more appealing name for it?), the beginnings of Carrol Shelby's line of Cobras, and the inklings of Fairway/Ford's later domination of Indianapolis (with Lotus) and Formula One (with the engine that powered every car -- save Ferrari -- for years, the Ford-Cosworth DFW).

This book is just FUN. As have been all the other BS Levy books that have gone before. We meet up again with all our old friends: Buddy Palumbo, Cal, Tommy, Big Ed, Julie, Hal, and Hank Lyons who is the narrator here.

This book (and the others) is for people interested in cars and racing, and despite what BS was told, these people DO read. OK, there are probably no English Literature courses assigning this as required reading (are there?), but it's meant to entertain. Maybe not the finest writing, and in some spots he (Levy) goes on-and-on repeating stuff over-and-over again with the same adjectives, making you think that perhaps the book could have been shortened by about 150 to 200 pages. But, no, I prefer it as it is, making the enjoyment last longer.

Great reading for the "car people"!

...hire a good editor! Your Buddy Palumbo series is the seminal work that we "gear heads" and "car crazies" count on to get our fix! The entire genre (which you have single handily established) is counting on you to nail this! Spend the greenbacks for a pro!

This review is from: The 200mph Steamroller, Book One: Red Reign (The Last Open Road 5) (Kindle Edition)

Wow, I've been mulling over this review for weeks since I finished the book. I'm a huge Levy fan. I bought two of his "The Last Open Road", one for myself, one to loan out. I gave away other copies to relatives and friends. I bought his tee-shirts and bumper stickers. About twenty friends read the book and car lovers and non-car lovers alike loved it. The sequels, while not as good, in descending order, were still great fun. So, twenty years later a new Levy book? It must be terrific, right? Well... being a Levy optimist I kept shoveling hoping to find a good book under all the dross. Eventually I found half a good book but had to dig through too many unnecessary extensive descriptions. Of the "Ford" (under a pseudonym) offices, "Mrs Ford's" decorating skills and her house, for examples, and the repetitious musings of the main character as to how difficult it is to write, how inexperienced he is with women, and other cries of the heart. Levy's cutsie-pie style of writing with sentences containing almost endless strings of nouns, gerunds, or adjectives got very tiring after awhile.

The basic concept is a great one. The original series was about sports car racing in North America. This is an expansion: Ford's foray into international motorsports as well as its introduction of the Mustang, with extensive asides into international motorsport events. Levy crams all the details he can into each event. Again, repetitively. We read about the list of cars and drivers at Sebring at least three times, yeah we got it.
