Product Description

There's a precious bond that develops between a mother and her baby, during nursing. It's a special time, dedicated only to them, as they discover one another. This book shows a young child's transition from being breast fed, to eating food, in a loving way.

About the Author

<DIV><DIV>Award winning children s book authors David and Mutiya Vision are a husband and wife team who've navigated the goliath responsibility of raising seven children! And yet, this task isn't nearly as challenging and unpredictable as the world they saw their children entering into. As a result of overcoming adversity in their own childhood experiences, the Visions wished to give children the benefit of information they didn't have access to while growing up. The Visions collaborated to produce a number of character building children's books. From literary works their creativity blossomed into various workshops, family oriented programs, videos, and music designed to entertain, raise the human spirit and strengthen mental development in children of all ages. Their materials assist children in confronting life issues, understanding emotions, exploring options, discovering their purpose and making wise choices in any given situation. Their commitment and vision inspires children, parents, communities, and educators everywhere to utilize their own talents in making the world a better place for all. David and Mutiya Vision are the authors of 10 published children's books. Their book My Choices Make Me Who I Am won The National Best Book 2009 Award in the children s education category. 2.0 out of 5 stars So very disapointing, September 10, 2008
I am so disappointed. Very much so. I returned My Very Breast Friend today. I was so excited. I try to collect all the breastfeeding books I find for my children. My first son is almost 3 and almost self-weaned. My second son is 10 months. I search out positive books that reflect to them, the life they lead.

The first part of Breast Friend is excellent - with fun lines such as "I didn't understand anything in this new place I found myself" talking about birth. "then someone picked me up and held me close ...so much tenderness" and I love this line "Whenever I called Breasty she always brought Mom to me, Breast friend you mean the world to me".

My serious complaint come with the weaning. The story is told from the point of view of the little boy - the story is his memories. The weaning is harsh. I didn't expect child lead weaning, but a gentle and respectful weaning, in my opinion, should have been portrayed. The child remembers trauma in the weaning, I personally will not share that with my children as part of a positive breastfeeding experience.

"Mom said Thins will have to change. No more eating Breast for you" and "she locked Breasty away from me" and "I felt lost ..." and "I cried but breasty never came" and "I was in so much pain"

The boy makes a good recovery and end the story happy - BUT that is a horrible weaning, I would be ashamed of any friend who weaned in such a way without dire medical need, and I am certainly not going to read it to my children. I would have no way to justify the mother's choice to them.

I am so disappointed. It is a fun oversized book and it portrays a minority, all very positive things, but the weaning ruins it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST have for nursing / breastfeeding / breastfed children., December 22, 2006
This book is a must get for ALL nursing parents AND for all children of African descent. Any children's book on this subject deserves 5 stars because there are so few of them. I discovered "My Very Breast Friend" at Hue-Man bookstore in Harlem while on an outing with my 2yr old and 2 month old daughters. My two year old was drawn to the book because she is newly weaned--so the pictures and the words remind her of something very special to her. To be honest, I was taken aback when I came across this book because I am a mother who wrote a strikingly similar story for my daughter when I could not find any children's books addressing the nursing process. I noted that there was a market for books of this nature (hence my book) because, while my research has uncovered that these books exist, it has also uncovered the difficulty in finding them. I am in the process of finding a way to publish my book and to my surprise I find that "my book" already exists. Nonetheless, I am going back out to purchase THIS book. Our children who nurse or who have nursed need to see that portion of "themselves" in books just as children who are bottle-fed see themselves in their literature. I believe "My Very Breast Friend" will prove itself to be a best friend to all nursing families.
