Editorial Reviews

Review

A little known facet of African history comes alive in this compulsively readable novel, populated by characters you'll long remember. -- Richard Lewis

A study of the way wars roll over diverse cultures and individual lives with indifference to people in their paths. -- Rich Chiappone

From the day of her birth to her adoption by German immigrants, Rebeka's story will hold you spellbound. -- Rachel Garrett, Editing Services, Inc.

Product Description

East Africa, 1905.

An ancient Maasai legend rests on an infant girl orphaned by a smallpox epidemic. Rebeka, adopted by German missionaries, is trapped between two cultures with a burden she cannot bear--the legend's fulfillment that she alone inherits. Around her swirl the events of the early twentieth century: a massive rebellion, a world war, and the transfer of her country from German to British control. Rebeka's responsibility to the legend is ultimately decided by a landmark case in His Majesty's Court, where German missionaries, an Italian exile, British colonials, and tribal customs clash.

5.0 out of 5 stars I stayed up too late reading this!, April 19, 2005
This novel is an intriguing mix of history, culture (African, European), spiritual life, war and law (plus much more) wrapped in a very good story. Characters are well-developed, diverse and complex enough to be quite interesting without being hard to keep track of. I appreciated her writing style and found the story beleivable. The print and format is easy on the eyes as well, which is good if you find yourself as I did, squinting under a crooked lamp reading late into the night and not wanting to wake my husband!
