The enneagram provides an exceptional map of the core motivations and perspectives behind what we do. It identifies the paradigm or "box" that we unconsciously live in. While it is valuable as a diagnostic tool, it is light on giving ways to help us move beyond our barriers.

By tradition, the primary goal of this work is to "wake up" from one's enneatype trance. There is little on what to do after you've awakened, other than to be aware that you are. How to move this into applying it to our lives are lacking in most teachings and books on the enneagram.

Coaching on the other hand has many strategies of making changes. The enneagram gives a big "why" as we do what we do. Coaching gives us the "how" to make this knowledge effective in our lives. OUT OF THE BOX: COACHING WITH THE ENNEAGRAM is an excellent guide to bridging the gap between the two.

The authors have written this in a very user friendly style, filled with real life examples that really demonstrate their points. Unlike many books on the enneagram, it is designed to be used in day to day living not as an intellectual exercise. It is filled with suggestions, techniques, and strategies to help coach anyone (professionally or personally) move to a better life.

There is just enough theory for those new to the enneagram to get a workable understanding of the system without getting lost in minute details. Those experienced in the enneagram will find this book refreshing in its practicality.

The authors of this book have brought many years of knowledge and experience into an extremely practical guide on how to get the best out of the Enneagram.

I started using the case studies immediately to help my clients get over hurdles quickly, effectively and, most importantly, permanently.

An in-depth analysis of each Type is presented with the major roadblocks to success. This section alone has helped me to narrow down the time it takes to spot my client' challenges.

They go on to explain what second order change is and what the long term implications are of not using this model in any coaching practice.

My wife is a human resources director in one of Canada's largest law firm. She has started to understand how to use the Enneagram with her employees with no prior knowledge of Type whatsoever, and is having great results.

This is a must have for anyone who is serious about taping into the power of the Enneagram and coaching.

"Out of the Box" will open your heart to the unconscious world of people's deep motives, a 'secret garden' that is invisible to almost everyone. But this garden is "hidden in plain view!" The authors guide you to readily see through the facade of casual social interaction into people's souls.

"Out of the Box" has been a gift of multiple breakthroughs:

* in my understanding of people generally

* in my ability to reach and make a difference for the people I care about

* in my self-development as a business coach and husband.

The writing is deep and rich, replete with wisdom. The book is all substance with zero fluff. The authors have chosen their words very carefully to convey precise messages clearly.

"Out of the Box" is more than deep: It is also breezy and entertaining. It is an easy read because of its many stories of deep encounters with real people. It brings peoples' deep motives alive in your heart as well as your mind. The authors appeal to your heart for deep transformation. Any experienced coach knows how key this is. Many teachers teach this, but "Out of the Box" demonstrates how to do it.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know people deeply, and especially for those who care to help people become the "Captains of their Souls." You will be better able to guide someone you care about past their submerged "rocks in the water" to safe harbor in the land of their dreams.

As an engineer trained in scientific certainty, I was not prepared to recognize the wide range of personalities and behaviors I worked with in a large corporation. Understanding the Enneagram was extremely helpful to me in dealing effectively with peers, subordinates, and superiors. It also helped me learn how to deal with my own weaknesses and leverage my strengths. Reading this book will introduce you in a practical and very readable way to what Enneagram coaching can do for you and those you work with.

The enneagram, a tantalizing tool for helping us know ourselves warts and all, has been spreading its insights and other surprises this long time. Yet as a discipline it's still in its infancy, and this book shows it chasing new horizons.

The good news is that we humans keep finding out how much of our potential is so far from realized. Reading OUT OF THE BOX: COACHING WITH THE ENNEAGRAM gradually and systematically brings home to one the vast psychic and imaginative energy the average individual carries about unused and unexploited. Then the book tells us systematic step by step about the nine generic ways we relate to life and how we can enhance these, get rid of the warts, cause flowers to grow where there were only weeds -- I find that metaphors best express the nuanced, elusive ripples the enneagram can create in the average life.

Great things are happening all around us. The world brims with excitement and innovation. So why are so many of us in a rut? We're too busy or confused or fatigued. We got mired in the status quo. Consciously or otherwise we are waiting for help. Which assumes many forms. The enneagram is by no means the best-known remedy people turn to to give life a make-over. This means that when people stumble on it they find it fresh and invigorating. This may be because its ramifications burrow deep down into life.

Coaching, like the enneagram itself, is a new way of coping with time-worn human realities. One wishes one didn't need to be taken by the hand by gurus who claim to be wiser than we are. Sad history shows, however, that nearly all of us, left to our own devices, fall short, miss the mark, screw up.

I'm not naive enough to think this book will solve all lefe's problems. But it is a comforting book.Read more ›
