Emilio Gil is an important figure in the field of Design, having founded the TAU DISEÑO, Spain's pioneering company in the world of design, institutional communications and the creation and development of corporate visual identity programs. In this large and lavishly illustrated volume Gil covers the history of design in Spain from 1939 to 1975, including the premiere artists in this field in essays and illustrations by some of Spain's finest writers. The result is a treasure house of not only some of the better graphic design of history, but also a running commentary of the struggles of Spain's ever changing political image.

In his introductory chapter 'Pioneers Unawares', Gil explores the origins of the design profession and he explains his goal of bringing to the public's attention the graphic design of Spanish artists whose work deserves wider attention and respect. He also sets the purpose of the book to reveal the history of the development of graphic design in Spain emphasizing the impact of design on the products and behavior of the times. Graphic art may suggest the altering fashion influences of history, but more importantly graphic design mirrors the social and political as well as the commercial sense of the period.

What follows is a collection of essays examining advertising, humor and expressionism, and biographies of various gifted designers of Spain's history. The layout of the book is artful and the examples of each of the artists mentioned by the writers are reproduced in high quality color and resolution. This is another of the Mark Batty Publications devoted to Design as Art and deserves a place in the libraries of colleges, universities and art schools throughout the world. Grady Harp, April 09
