As a young woman myself, I was incredibly blessed to read Jane Meyer's new book, "The Life of St. Brigid, Abbess of Kildare." Not only was I fascinated by the history of St. Brigid, I was encouraged by her incredible strength. In addition, I was greatly moved to see how St. Brigid's faith in Christ motivated her towards loving everyone around her. Particularly inspiring was her pantry prayer - "Oh God, bless my pantry! Pantry which the Lord has blessed. Mary's Son, my friend, come and bless my pantry!" And He did! From the abundance which the Lord bestowed unto her, St. Brigid faithfully gave ... and gave and gave and gave ... even when it was quite risky. I felt challenged to similarly pray, and trust the Lord to provide not only for my family and me, but to give from the abundance we have already been blessed.

Despite living in a culture opposed to her faith, St. Brigid stood firm, continuing to pour out her life in service to those around her, as an offering to God - definitely a role-model for women in any age! "The Life of St. Brigid" is a treasure for which I am truly grateful!

I am very glad to have purchased this book, which tells of some of the miracles from the hagiography of St. Brighid. The Kells-style illuminations are absolutely breathtaking. The story is well-told also, though I would recommend this book for older kids and adults, and the book "Brigid's Cloak" for the younger set, as it will hold their attention more readily. Nonetheless I highly recommend this for your library!

Written by Jane G. Meyer and illustrated by Zachary Lynch, "The Life of Saint Brigid" is a paperback children's book about the life and legend of Celtic Saint Brigid of ancient Ireland. Illustrations reminiscent of Celtic engravings and enlightenings with stained glass colors enhance the text. Born of an Irish chieftain father and a Christian slave mother, Brigid encounters many trials in her growth from childhood to maturity. Because of her generosity with her father/owner's possessions and food, he attempts to give her away to a neighboring king. Ultimately she is freed upon the advice of the king and she also eludes her family's attempt to marry her to a gentle and handsome poet suitor. In desperation, Brigid scarred her face and so convinced her family of her wish to become a bride of Christ. The scar healed miraculously when the priest placed a white veil on her head. Another wondrous story about Brigid tells of her request for land to build a monastery on from her king. She was supposed to be limited to the amount of land that her cloak could cover, but again miraculously, when she laid down the cloak it spread across a wide expanse of land and ultimately became the Abbey of Kildare, where Brigid became Abbess, as well as sheperdess. Brigid continued to tend both her sheep, her novitiates, and the poor, feeding all she could. Because her one convent was not large enough for all the Irish women who wished to become nuns like her, Brigid prayed for abundance and again was rewarded with the eventual founding of many, many convents all across Ireland, which Brigid traveled to visit often with great hardship. On one of her journeys, she gave aid and comfort to a dying pagan chieftain who had terrified and alienated his servants and caretakers.Read more ›

This book, the Life of St. Brigid, was on a book table at a Greek Festival. As soon as I got it home and read it properly, I ordered 5 more copies to have to give as gifts. Wonderful illustrations, fresh contemporary look at celtic design. The story of Brigid is well told, not soppy like so much hagiography. It occurs to me that studying the artfully done illustrations would be a wonderful way to get children to figure out how to fill a page with color, form, and negative space. This is a great book!

From Meyer's lyrical prose to Lynch's amazing illustrations, this beautiful retelling of the life of St. Brigid transports the reader back in time, across centuries and continents, to ancient Ireland in about the 5th century. Meyer's familiarity with Ireland is obvious, as is her knowledge of the history of ancient Christianity on Emerald Isle, adding depth to this enduring tale. Lynch reveals his careful study of ancient Celtic art as he masterfully weaves timeless symbols of the cycle of life into his powerful illustrations - truly breathtaking! One could sit and study Lynch's illustrations alone for hours, as they are deep with meaning and beauty.

Though I was familiar with both the author and illustrator from excellent earlier books, (Meyers - "The Man and the Vine", Lynch - "St. Patrick: Enlightener of Ireland"), I was extremely impressed by "The Life of St. Brigid, Abbess of Kildare." Not only have I bought copies for the special children in my life, I have also sent it other adult celtophiles, as it will surely encourage and inspire readers of all ages! Highly recommended!

A mighty influence over Ireland is, indeed, what became of the young servant girl, Brigid. This book illustrates in bright colors and Celtic style the story of a young girl who saw Christ in everyone she met.

The story unfolds to tell how Brigid did all that she could, throughout her life, to meet the needs of those she met, even if it meant giving away the king's sword to someone who needed money! By the end of her earthly life, Brigid had touched the lives of thousands, and had spread Christ's love all over Ireland.

The book concludes with encouraging the reader to look to the needs of those around them, as Saint Brigid did, and in so doing, "receive the Christ in the stranger's guise..."
