I finished reading this extraordinary book about a month ago...I continue to relive parts of Kent's expedition wondering if faced with similar situations would I too have followed two masters. When a book continues to play out in my mind long after it is read, it becomes an astonishing story.

Kent Dickinson takes us through the complex world of the Chicago Local 110 union with mob ties going back to Al Capone. His journey begins when he follows his father's footsteps into a shady world, one that his father both feared and seemingly admired. As this true testament begins to unravel, Kent is viewed as a loving father, and a devoted hard working husband. He willingly joined the crusade to save his union and the careers of its 400 members, at times, not deliberately, placing loved ones, workers, and the public in harms way. This transition was not displayed in a brief moment of weakness...it became years of little steps into the dark world of the mob invested Union.

Power, greed, money, and ego were just a few motivations that placed Kent as front-runner in one of the most powerful positions associated within the union. He was admired as one of the most dominant enforcers, which inadvertently made him a target for the FBI investigation to bring down this corrupt union.

I was intrigued by the by the sub titles under each Chapter starting with Chapter 10..."From the Grand Jury Indictment." This carried the weight of doom long before Kent's ambivalent life was shattered.

"Crimes of a Christian" brilliantly displays the heavy burden some are faced with when trying to "fight for a cause," that are lead to believe is for the good of those involved, in this case family and coworkers.

"Crimes of a Christian" will keep your attention, and is a good-read. The first half to three-quarters of the book is all about what led to the Federal charges against Dickinson. I got the impression that the author had to have run his manuscript past his lawyer, because he is very open and quite detailed about what crimes he committed, and the planning that went into each of them. Each chapter begins with a line or two from his indictment, and gives you a slight hint of what's to come in that chapter.

From his very young adult years Dickinson went around the country making known the fact that his projectionist's union, headquartered in Chicago, wasn't happy with the state of projectionist contracts in the Mid-west. He went to various theaters in various states to clog toilets, slash movie screens, drop stick-bombs, and cause panic by lighting smoke-bombs. Throughout the book I got the feeling that Dickinson saw his crimes as simply childhood pranks- but pranks that could greatly benefit his projectionist union (or rather, the union fat-cats). Although he knew there could be serious consequences, he seems convinced (through the entirety of the book) that as long as he didn't commit arson, his crimes really weren't crimes at at all, just a little . . . (justifiable) "muscle".

The last portion of the book, where he describes his time in prison, reads a bit more like a collection of short stories, with little connection between them.

The title's "Crimes" portion of the book is clear enough; the "Christian" part of it seems to refer to after Dickinson is caught and decides to tell the whole truth about what he'd done. I'd expected some insight into his spiritual growth of coming to know his actions were wrong.

Great writing!
Having lived near Chicago and having heard many of the Al Capone stories and Mob rumors, I HAD to read this book !! It takes place in the area of and near Chicago and includes parts of the complex union which leads you on an exciting journey of one man's life. Kent is a good person who tried to follow all the right rules until he found himself, somehow, crossing the line into another misguided way of life. Though hoping he was helping others by his actions in the union as well as saving jobs for some, his plight failed and Kent found himself in an FBI investigation ultimately ending in a Chicago Court room . This very interesting book follows Kent's journey from his union experiences, the FBI investigation, the trial, prison time ...... and more. This book is a real page turner!
I enjoyed the book and hope there will be more.

I heard about Kent Dickinson's "Crimes of a Christian: Serving Two Masters" in the Chicago Reader. When I read the review I knew I wanted to read it as it sounded very compelling. It is, and is highly recommended not just for religious content but for those who enjoy reading about local history, crime and books about the legal procession. The book (published by One Body Press in 2011) appears to be catching on, so it may be a little easier to locate.
