The great acting teacher Alvina Krause used to say to her students, "One plays tragedy as if there's a dark cloud above, but slightly behind, your head, and when your head shifts, it shifts. You can't ever see it but you always know it's there." Krause could have been talking about Chris Fink's book of short stories "Farmer's Almanac." Set among the hard-working citizens of rural Wisconsin, these forceful yet measured stories, employing prose so poetic that you stop every other page to checkmark some heartbreakingly resonant sentence, have the dignified grace of a diligent workman shoveling mud and manure until the shovel clangs against a strongbox of...what? Hard truth? This is regional fiction that is not just about the land, it's in it. If you read to be taken out of your world and into another, this might be for you, because coming out of his stories is like exiting a matinee onto a street that's alarmingly sunny, and you halt and blink at a reality that seems no less real than the one you were in a moment ago, but more opaque.

A book of short stories not so much to enjoy but to admire for its quite fine conveyance of misery, death and sorrow in one rural Wisconsin county. This is writing that would be envied by many a MFA student.

Chris Fink displays a wonderful sense of hometown pride in this collection of short stories. Reminiscent of Lake Woebegone, a small town in Wisconson has its share of characters that Mr. Fink paints in a very down to earth way. Each short story is a study of character and the circumstances. I would recommend this book to my mother!

I bought this primarily because I am from Wisconsin, and thought to reconnect with some of my memories. The atmosphere Fink's stories evoke seems more like that of Northern Wis. than the South where his fictional county purports to be located; at other times the agricultural settings suggest far more southern climes. Regardless, the writing is terrific, if very dark, as seems to be the trend these days, and the grim fatalism of stories intensifies as the volume comes to a close. I am glad I read Farmer's Almanac, although I do sometimes rue writing with such an earnest and determined focus; I think Fink misses a lot of the humor that could be mined from his setting.

This book is not at all what I expected. IT was a great disappointment, I couldn't even endure to the end of it.

Step right up folks and we'll have a laugh a minute. A weak, forced one, maybe, but a laugh nonetheless.
Frankly, I couldn't even get a quarter of the way through it.

This book could be viewed as a little bit depressing, but only because the author made each character come to life. The book successfully stirred up true feelings about each one, and left me shaking my head for each character's unfortunate circumstance. Left me feeling blessed for the great opportunities I've had in my lifetime.
