I had read some negative things about this book but thought I would give it a chance because I like reading books that reflect the real side of people but this book was a mess. It was just screen shots and some conversations....it felt all over the place and really didn't feel like she did any real writing. I think she could be an amazing writer but this book just didn't do it. Just felt like a waste of time.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I don't even know what to say about it. It is the cutting edge of literature, and so deeply affecting and moving that it made me burst into tears. This is a fascinating book. If you are a younger girl, I would bet that you will GET it. Marie Calloway gives us not just a piece of her soul but her whole soul--that is what art is. Some people are just too pretentious to see it. I read this in one sitting. Could not put it down. Then I gave it to my sister. The author is a genius. And geniuses are always misunderstood. I decided to buy this after wondering whether it was worth it from the tepid reviews on amazon. It is. Trust me.

This is a sometimes hard to endure but bravely composed work ... an honest confronting of what makes a particular person who she is. (I'm guessing here about the "honest," of course, but few people would *dishonestly* own up to such mysteriously raw thoughts and feelings as M.C. does; there'd hardly be a point, in nonfiction.) We need more writers like this, as uncomfortable as they make everybody. We don't need all writers to be like this -- please, no -- but more.

I found this book very hard to follow and really get into.

There really was no "story" to it.
Would like to read about her experience as a biography that is continuous and not as broken up.

It read like a young woman's journal but there was really nothing special about it. Not the writing style, not the topics. I was not shocked or entertained. I honestly didn't even finish reading it because I got bored half way through.

Reading this on a Kindle was difficult since it contains many images that do not translate to the Kindle screen very well. (I'm on an original Kindle, so it might be better on a Kindle Fire or Paperwhite--maybe time for an upgrade!)

In any case, the book was just ok to me. The disliked the main character very much by the end, the meandering story made me frustrated.

This is not a book you can read with a preconception of what it's going to be. In terms of style and content this is a very good book. Ms. Calloway writes about difficult topics well and deals technological changes that affect how we communicate in her fiction (texting, the internet, etc.) which is very difficult to do and it makes sense. It seems autobiographical and probably is to some degree but that's not the point. The point is that it causes if not forces one to think about sex in important ways. Sex is integral to who we are and the sex the protagonist likes to have may make you feel uncomfortable and not be the kind of sex you want to have. That does not make her a bad writer, does not make the book bag, and does not warrant ad hominem attacks. The fact that it feels like she's writing very honestly is a testament to the work's quality. The stories are funny too, in parts, although I tend to find sex unfunny, especially when abuse is in the background. I found myself wanting to befriend her. She writes befriending her is no simple matter, but that is true for EVERYONE. Everyone is complicated and has his, her, etc. own problems; Ms. Calloway's character is introspective and put her own issues on display. This book will stay with you and you will look forward to what she produces in the future, but don't want to put any pressure on her. Maybe give her a hug and hope that everyone is going to be mostly OK and not put any pressure on her. Kurt Vonnegut, in an interview with Lee Stringer made a point to tell Mr. Stringer that he didn't have to write a second good book, or a second book, if he didn't want to. I expect Ms. Calloway to write more very good things, but that is not to put any pressure on her.Read more ›

Calloway may not (yet) be the most adept writer of this generation, but she does something new. She's able to capture our time, while it's happening, without nostalgia or self-flattery. The narrator is unabashedly self-involved, but Calloway keeps the reader interested by writing in a new and different way. I can't wait to see what she publishes at 31.
