This book is now the recommended text book for the LeanKanban Foundation level training "Getting Started with Kanban". Mike's Kanban from the Inside has by far the most extensive and up-to-date coverage of Kanban used in creative and knowledge work businesses in the 21st Century than anything published to date.

‘Inside Kanban’ is a very insightful book for everyone interested in the Kanban Method. Beginners can easily understand true, practical meaning and goals behind method’s principles and practices. The book is full of author’s first-hand examples of how to take your team (or organization) along the evolutionary path towards 'the true north’ of Kanban. More experienced readers will surely benefit from a new perspective on Kanban principles and practices re-shuffled with nine values. Part II takes you deeper into Lean, System Thinking, ToC, so you will end up hungry for more, chasing for recommended titles.

With Kanban from the Inside, Mike Burrows has done a tremendous service for the product development community across multiple disciplines.

For all of its power and popularity, David Anderson's 'Kanban' blue book is built around case studies. It's great for explaining why kanban works. But not everyone can easily synthesize from it how they can get started applying this approach.

By contrast, Mike's book begins with a simple and easily accessible guide for implementing the basics of a kanban system. It then builds on that to explain how kanban relates to the best of modern management thinking like Agile, Lean, Theory of Constraints, and Systems Thinking.

It provides useful summaries of each, as well as recommended reading for deeper understanding. This should be extremely helpful for those who might otherwise see all these ideas as mutually exclusive - and confusing.

This is a great addition to the modern management literary canon. Well worth your time.

For my organization, which has been using some Kanban practices but hasn't been exposed to or learned the underlying values, this book has been an invaluable reference. I've used it specifically to inform my teammates' and my understanding of Kanban values in the context of depth-of-Kanban assessments, which give our people new ways of thinking about their work and, in one colleague's words, show "how to help them be a part of successful and continually improving teams."

Mike's book builds on David Anderson's Kanban book and has been our go-to manual for in-depth understanding of many of the concepts we read about in blogs but don't have in one handy place.

The only problem I have now is trying to find my colleague who is currently reading it so that I can reference it! Perhaps it's time to order a few more...

Mike Burrows kicks off in part I of the book with an introduction to Kanban by nine values, rather than starting with the more obvious Kanban Foundational Principles (FP:s) or Kanban Core Practices (CP:s). The nine values are: Transparency, Balance, Collaboration, Customer focus, Flow, Leadership, Understanding, Agreement and Respect. Each value is presented in its own chapter, and are mapped to the FP:s and CP:s. I like this a bit more theoretical introduction as a complement to the more ”hands on”-approaches that are present in other books about Kanban.

The second part gives some taste on Models. The ones being presented are: System Thinking, Theory of Constraints (TOC), Agile, TPS (Toyota Production System) and Lean, together with some smaller models. As it’s not in scope of the book, the models are briefly introduced but with lists of further reading for each and one of them. I find this section very interesting.

Ok, Mike have really saved the best thing for last! In part III - Implementation, STATIK (Systems Thinking Approach to Introducing Kanban) is presented. The book ends going back to the values with a check-list to understand (measure) where you are in your Kanban journey.

Recommendation
If you’re into Kanban you should definitely buy this book! I wish I’ve had it (and especially the knowledge from part III) when I implemented my first Kanban system.

This could be very well qualified as the book that shows the current state of Kanban for knowledge work. David Anderson's book on Kanban is the de-facto book to get introduced with Kanban and Mike's is the perfect complement for those who already read David's book. For those entirely new to Kanban it may be better to read Mike's book and then consult David's book.

Mike adds what the Kanban community calls the human side and it is a very important complement to understanding what Kanban ultimately does to organizations.

I read this book a while back... should've written this short review earlier.

The author brilliantly takes us on a journey of creating the powerful context (of the nine values) by gently weaving in the Kanban method, while getting us present to what we truly care about. This contextual framework becomes the lens through which we get to explore the content (various agile methods) that gave rise to the Kanban Method along with a practical guide to implementing one. With this exploration, we gain insights to effectively transform ourselves to naturally come from a Service delivery mindset.
