This book had been in my TBR pile for quite a while. I was super lucky and won it in a huge blog contest someone was having. It was quite refreshing to read a YA novel that had elements that would attract older teens, while at the same time had content I would feel comfortable sharing with a much younger teen. I am not sure, with the introduction of the "New Adult" category of books if this would still be considered young adult because the characters are in college, but I feel that the writing and content would definitely appeal to teens.

I'll tell you what I liked about it:

*The friendships/relationships run very deep. It is nice to see how the main characters truly care about each other and work together. They truly are family to one another. None of the main characters are ruled by their own selfishness. The "evil" characters, well that is another story.

*I love the way the story unfolds. The author does not overly share information that our main character, Jen, does not know. Seeing the story unfold before her eyes made it more "magical".

*I adore, love, am excited about, (insert a ton of awesome descriptors here), Dani's relationship. I would say more, but I do not want to add spoilers. Let's just say that it really warmed my heart.

*This book is appropriate for the age group. This novel does not push the envelope with sex and language. While those types of books have their place and audience, it is wonderful to have a book that breaks that mold without having content below the age level.

*The author made sure to expose us to the places the characters went during their semester aboard. It would be easy to have the whole novel take place on the ship, but she allowed the reader to visit many places along the way.

So I thought this was a pretty good read. When I first stumbled upon it - as I do with many of books now - I saw someone wrote a review saying it reminded them of Harry Potter almost and if you read that and was like ehh no thank you i don't want a copy of Harry Potter than its okay this isn't like Harry Potter. A chance encounter on a study aboard (college) boat ... i mean ship - if you read the book you will get the joke there - anywhos reveals who Jen really is.

So to begin with I thought the plot was really interesting, it was more like an introductory story to me really. It gives you a lot of information about this new world of Magics and Non-magics. And i am big follower of paranormal, so i am thinking, please i know everything give me a break. I shouldn't of, i haven't made many, really actually maybe i've come across elementals once or twice, I did read the Elemental Series by Brigid Kemmerer which were really good. Anyways the elementals there and here are different, the werewolves are different, the vampires are similar to more modern takes on them but hey they don't sparkle so that is nice. :)! Bonus really, there is a mermaid but i haven't actually gotten around to a mermaid story so i can't tell you how they differ or not from newer modern mermaids. All and all i enjoyed the new takes on the paranormals or for the most part.

The plot can be a little slow going at some points but that is because the reader and Jen are learning a lot of new things and Elizabeth Kirke i hope was trying to make it easier on us so that we weren't overwhelmed with all this new information.

I loved this book! It had everything paranormal possible in it!! Vampires, Witches, Werewolves, Mermaids, Fire Elemental, Water Elemental, Wizards, just everything you can think of in one story and to top it all off they are on a cruise as students taking classes!! This book was very well written, and very fast paced. I couldn't put it down and I had to know what was around the next corner!! I cant wait for book 2 and see the next adventure!! Thank you Elizabeth for such an awesome heart pounding story!! 10*s out of 5*s!!

What do you look for in young adult fantasy?

If your answer has anything to do with relatable characters, creative spins on familiar magical beings, and adventures that will keep you on the edge of your seat, check out More than Magic: Semester Aboard.

It's got a modern take on magic, combining laptops with leviathons. It's got three-dimensional, realistic characters you will fall in love with (and possibly want to date). It's got someone new to the magical world, learning with you. Above all, it's a story where being stronger, smarter, better isn't how you win. And it's got some clever twists I'd never have expected.

Some of the people I know who've read it, found the beginning slow - I didn't - but if you do, keep reading. Trust me, it's worth it.

I have always wanted to experience a semester of schooling aboard a ship. But, because I have a fear of the ship sinking, I’ve never followed through—I’ve never even been on a cruise, to be honest. Instead, I opted for educational semesters in Europe, Asia, and South America, so I can’t complain in the least, but… the semester aboard a ship—that’s the one that got away.

Kirke presents a magical world aboard this ship, one of vampires, merfolk, water and fire elementals, witches, and werewolves… and I can only imagine how much fun it would be to be on a ship with all these colorful characters. However, Jen herself put a damper on my mood when it came to all the festivities and issues: Jen always seemed to need saving. She didn’t listen to others and, on many an occasion, got others hurt because she wouldn’t listen and then wouldn’t be able to take care of herself. I’m more of a strong female lead enthusiast than a damsel in distress one, and so I held some animosity towards Jen and her inability to do anything throughout much of the text. The other characters were great, and I enjoyed them very much, but Jen just wasn’t my favorite, which is a shame as she was the main character. However, by the end she does learn to take care of herself a little bit—she’s growing, as it were—and I think she’ll be a much stronger character in the next installment.

(Please note: I use the rating system of Goodreads, which is different from Amazon. My overall personal rating is that I liked it)
