This book is a little primer for people suffering from pelvic pain. It talks about how it affects your life and how doctors don't understand it.

Pelvic pain/abdominal issues range from bladder issues to IBS to bone misalignment, joint dysfunctions, muscular issues, and digestive disorders. And sometimes you just have pain for no known reason.

The book uses several different metaphors to make its point, such as pain being like a cup running over, or having a lion on your back all day.

It talks about the body's alarm system and how chronic pain means your body can't get the alarms to shut down. It emphasizes that just because you have pain it doesn't necessarily mean that something is wrong.

I think that in part it is an effort to comfort those who suffer from abdominal/pelvic pain issues because you can't see what is in there and the fear that something is drastically wrong tends to be rather high.

My only complaint was I thought the book was too brief. It starts out well and introduces some concepts, such as cortisol production, that someone might need to pay attention to, but then it doesn't say where to look for help. The book then goes on to advocate things like eating right (but doesn't say what that means), and exercising such as stretches, but doesn't spell out anything specific. Just saying "do aerobics" is not especially helpful, especially if you're so sick you can't actually *do* aerobics.

This is a good book to give to people who want to understand what I'm dealing with - my husband, for instance, or close friends. It helps them understand how much pain I'm in, if nothing else, and how they might help.

I loved this little inexpensive book. I read it every morning when I was going through PT for pelvic floor dysfunction. I MEMORIZED it. I still use the lion and the imaging exercises from it daily. Would highly recommend this little gem!

As a long-time sufferer of pelvic pain, I own every book on the subject. This new book from Sandy Hilton (and others) is fantastic -- I wish it were the first pelvic pain book I read, rather than the last! The other vulvodynia / pelvic pain books offer medication advice and predict dire outcomes of a life without undies or bicycle rides. This book offers hope -- and it provides a true path to recovery.

The authors distill the realities of pelvic pain and the social/emotional/physical ramifications of living with such pain. The book's illustrations do a great job of analogizing the complex and mystifying pain responses of a nervous-system-gone-haywire. For the first time, a pain book made me feel like I wasn't alone in this experience and that there are providers who understand chronic pelvic pain.

Most importantly, they craft a clear path out of the state of pain, a path that is focused around patient empowerment and the patient's ability to regain control of their pain symptoms. Their approach is gentle and non-invasive, and they helped me understand why I hurt and that my body is not broken. Through my pelvic physical therapy, which applies this book's methodology, I am finally on the road to true recovery.

If you buy one book about vulvodynia/pelvic pain, choose this one!

I have already read A Headache in the Pelvis and Heal Pelvic Pain, and I think both are more useful books for an interstitial cystitis patient. They are much more technical, especially A Headache in the Pelvis, and I like that. This book seems like it is written for ten year olds, which I suppose could be helpful in some situations. My biggest problem with the book is that it totally focuses on the idea that you pelvic pain is coming from prolonged over stimulated nerves, and it sort of reinforces the idea that "it's all in your head." There is no discussion of the physical, structural, anatomical issues and actual diseases that can also cause pelvic pain. It just assumes that your pain is caused by your nervous system alone, which is pretty insulting actually, when so many pelvic pain patients have already been told erroneously that it's all in their heads, only to find out "hey! my bladder is full of ulcers and glomerulations! I have PCOS, and endometriosis, and a split sciatic nerve! and gluten allergies, yeast overgrowth, autoimmune disease, etc."

Written in a manner that is accessible to both clinicians and patients, this book takes a biopsychosocial approach to the management of chronic pelvic pain and presents up to date research in neuroscience and pain physiology in an easy to digest format. Although it deals specifically with pelvic pain, the ideas presented are equally applicable to other chronic pain conditions. The authors use some simple but effective concepts such as the pelvic pain’s measuring cup which can ‘overflow’ as it takes in information from multiple sources, anatomically and emotionally, eventually resulting in the brain processing this information as pain in the pelvis. The simple illustrations help to reinforce the written detail. Information on various treatment options are presented with helpful hints on how to start exercising and using meditation and visualisation techniques.
This is a well written, easy to follow handbook for patients with pelvic pain and a useful teaching adjunct for clinicians.
