Management books are commonplace and most managers have read at least a few, sometimes at the request of their employer. The bulk of them are rather boring and monotonous, but there are some good management books out there and one of them is Green Beans & Ice Cream. This management book is a little different in that it doesn't offer a comprehensive set of management guidelines. Rather, it is a management book focused on employee motivation, team morale, and the role of positive reinforcement in achieving corporate goals.

Employees differ slightly in their motivational preferences, but study after study concludes the same thing that this book promotes: The philosophy that motivation is most likely to occur and employee morale most likely to remain high when positive reinforcement is used whenever possible. Many managers think money is key- just give employees a nice raise and/or a fat bonus check and they will be more productive and less likely to part ways. But research has shown that money does not buy employee happiness. It may work on some, but employees respond best to and are more motivated by positive reinforcement. It could be a simple word of thanks, active solicitation of input from all team members, or some other one-on-one recognition. It works wonders for motivating employees and the best thing is that it costs nothing and is in abundant supply. All that you, the manager, have to do is take the time and make it happen.

Green Beans & Ice Cream backs up its theory with anecdotes, examples, and official research and while its core concept is nothing new and is something most managers already know, it doesn't hurt to spell it out once again and offer some examples that show why positive reinforcement works so well and why other modes of motivation so often fail.

Sims drew the title of his book from his youthful experience when he told his mother that he didn't want to eat the green beans she placed in front of him as part of his meal. She responded by offering him ice cream if he ate the beans. After he became accustomed to the beans and liked them she was able to stop serving him ice cream.

His book examines different kinds of positive reinforcements that have been used, sometimes successfully and drastically at other time, and explains why proper positive reinforcements work to increase productivity, decrease costs, and enhance employee satisfaction. Each of his thirty-three chapters contains a relevant story that is informative and interesting, some quite memorable. He shows, for example, why having a "Best Employee of the Month" and why giving hats and jackets to effective employees do not work and may even disrupt employee performances. While the book focuses on improving work performances, its lessons can also be used in daily life, in families, and in other personal relationships.

Green Beans and Ice Cream provides insightful information on the subject of positive reinforcement. Using ice cream as a positive reinforcer to get someone to eat their green beans is a clever thing to do. This is what my own mother did to get me to eat my vegetables too. Bill Sims has created positive reinforcement systems to increase productivity in companies like Disney and Coca Cola. I work for an employment organization for individuals who have disabilities. I perform dual roles. I am a job empowerment teacher and as a regular support worker. It is very important to me give and receive positive reinforcement every day, for the simple fact that I have a strong desire to perform my duties better.

I believe that positive reinforcement can help me become a better teacher and employee. I need to clearly define the behaviors I want my students to have to get them to work harder. This is probably the most important lesson that Sims is trying to communicate. Sims also explains the difference between the three different kinds of positive reinforcement. There is tangible reinforcement in the form of money. There is social reinforcement in the form of verbal praise. There is also self positive reinforcement. This is motivation to do a good job for the pure love of the job. I have been fortunate to receive all three forms of positive reinforcement on the job. Green Beans & Ice Cream is the kind of book that motivates me to strive for excellence in my job.

GREEN BEANS & ICE CREAM: THE REMARKABLE POWER OF POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT ( GreenBean Leadership Publications) by Bill Sims, Jr. points out that change can take place in your company and/or life--but only if you back it up with something; i.e., positive reinforcement.

I was convinced of this with the author's first example:

* By the time I was a four-year old kid, I had already sampled green beans and concluded they weren't for me. The strings might as well have been wood chips, the way they caught in my throat as I tried to get them down.

Mom was my boss, and I was her newest employee. We had a real labor/management crisis going on. She begged, cajoled, and pleaded. But I was determined not to eat those green beans.

So I crossed my arms, frowned, and pouted, figuring she'd give up and forget about green beans, as she always had in the past.

But this time, Mom had a secret weapon. Now, there was something else on the table besides that dreaded green scourge.

"Billy Joe, if you eat your green beans you can have some . . ."

You guessed it. "Ice cream!"

This sheer stoke of maternal genius changed my behavior forever. In a flash, I saw those green beans, not as an oppressive burden, but as a first-class ticket to that lovely ice cream.

Sure, Mom got what she wanted-a balanced diet for her four-year-old.

And I got ice cream.

Pretty cool.

(Thanks, Mom. You are the best!)

I'm not sure exactly when or how Mom pared back the ice cream, but somehow I came to terms with green beans and accepted them for what they are-pretty healthy and tasty by themselves (oh, Mom learned to buy stringless bean, and that didn't hurt either).
