Stolen in Paradise is a turn-off-your-phone and curl up and read kind of a book. I set out to read it with certain expectations, having read Toby Neal's work before. "I know Toby Neal" I thought. I expected a swift moving plot, a nasty villain, a heinous crime, and a lot of psychological layering, to tie it all together. I got all that, but...on page 12, an eyebrow shot up. On page 26, my eyebrows went up. (not one, but both eyebrows). I scrapped my preconceived notions and relaxed into a thoroughly enjoyable, unpredictable read. At times, I chortled aloud, despite being on public transportation, and looking exceptionally silly doing so. Marcella Scott, while hinting at layers of underlying emotional issues, actually comes through as one of the most bold, charismatic, accurate images of a strong, modern woman, with dynamic, take no prisoners attitude, and a healthy, robust sexual appetite, that I've ever read. Marcella is the awesome chick you meet and instantly want to be friends with. She's bold, she's fearless, she's sexy, and she owns it. She's a woman I've met, and known, and loved, and laughed with. She's real. The villain wasn't who I thought it was, and the crime was interesting and well presented. I finished the book after 2 days, and said "damn". I wasn't ready to quit reading.

I've read all of the Lei crime series so far, and when I got this book I knew it was going to be great. I wasn't wrong. This book talks in depth about Marcella, the FBI agent who is also Lei's best friend. It takes place a bit before the fourth Lei novel and it helps set the stage for it a bit while not even being about Lei. When Marcella was first introduced I was quite excited about the idea she might get her own book. She was such a strong character that she demanded one. I was especially excited to see that she did in fact get one. The book itself emphasized further how strong her character is, and it gives a closer look into the kind of person she really is. She struggles with her past and her present, while dealing with work and a boss who seems to hate her. But with her parents there to support her, along with a hottie or two, she tackles a tough case even while it tangles into a deep web that really hits home. I hope there is more in this series (and maybe one more branch out character...*cough* Sophie *cough*) because I really enjoyed it. Fans of the Lei crime series look out, Marcella's going to knock your designer shoes off!!

Toby Neal was able to spin a strong character from the Lei crime series into what I hope will become its own series. Although written as a "companion" novel, this story could easily be a stand-alone without leaving a reader confused. The stories, as written, easily compliment, without detracting from, each other. Like Lei, Marcella is a strong, independent woman. But I really love the ways Marcella is different, the ways her "story" is different, and the way she grows in such a comparatively short time (granted, much of her growth occurred in her history rather than in the book itself).

I am drawn in by so many things...the setting, the mystery, the relationships, the strong characters. Marcella holds her own as the lead character, so much so that I'd love to see her continued evolution. (She isn't quite as frustrating as Lei!) I appreciate the way Ms. Neal uses her therapeutic background to make her characters real, facing "hidden" challenges that we might rather pretend didn't exist, and thriving in the face of those challenges. This is perhaps my favorite Toby Neal story to date. They just keep getting better!

Back to Honolulu and the fictional FBI Hottie with the shoes, agent Marcella Scott for Toby Neal. I found this book quite enjoyable after having read Ms. Neal's efforts in the Lei Crime Series. Her writing has definitely become more smooth as the books and characters have evolved and it is quite nice to get some of the back story on Marcella since we've met her a few times now.

The characters are again well written and the descriptions of the various places on Oahu were accurately done - maybe some more time on the Windward, Leeward or North Shore next time?

I was quite happy that I really didn't figure this one out very early on in the book and I was still second guessing my suspect as the story wen ton there are enough red-herrings and macguffins to keep you guessing and keep you reading.

I definitely recommend this book and if you are new to Ms. Neal - no need to go through the Lei Series first - you can jump right in with this one and then go back to the others as this is a nice stand alone piece.

The over all plot was ok, but just ok. I am not prudish but this story had far too much gratuitous sex and not very well written sex at that; if was superfluous to the story and distracting, very amateurish. The plot was only so so re it's development and and any one who has read at least one mystery story should have figured it out or close to it, fairly early in the book. If you get this book cheap enough, I.e. Free, it's an ok time killer but you'll soon forget about it. I wish it had been better but it didn't make it for me.
