Barbara Roy's book contains the dynamics of a good novel. It makes for an easy, yet challenging read. We have two friends with Alzheimer's. After I'd read the book, I asked the spouses if they wanted a copy, explaining that the taut, emotional text might be difficult for them at this stage. One spouse read it and was relieved to be able to relate to Barbara and Phil's journey. The other spouse said that she did not yet have the courage, but she keeps asking questions about the content. The poignancy of this story makes it much more than an average 'help' book. As the people in the story develop, the tensions began to rise and it becomes a page-turner. Although the end is a foregone conclusion, the pathways to that end are as beautiful, ragged, rough and uplifting as a range of mountains. Barbara Roy, a private person, had the courage to share her story with intimacy and grace,

This is a hard one to write about since i was a school mate of Barbara's . She is/was always talented, beautiful, extremely intelligent, motivated, and private. I will try to be objective. What she has shared in her book also shows courage. Whenever I read about another person's life, I do compare my life to theirs. It is a reference point that is natural, I beleive. I ask myself how I would have handled her ordeal dealing with Alzheimers, and I cant begin to imagine holding up as well as she did. I applaude her sharing this very private and difficult journey with us. It does show me that having good friends, and supportive family, along with personal faith is the wind beneath our wings.
I recommend this book for everyone, as the disease is going to affect so many more of us and there is no cure. It will become a huge drain on our resources , and those of the medical and sociatal community , and so many of us cannot afford the costs of that care, even if it is available. My own father, who had Alzheimers, died a terrible death at the hands of badly trained aides in a supposedly good nursing home. The neglect led to a small sore becoming gangrenous . It took him 9 days to die in hospice.

I was a longtime caregiver for my husband with Alzheimer's and I, too, wrote a book about the journey. I know how hard it is to be honest yet hopeful, to share the sadness of living with this disease as well as the surprise blessings it can bring. Barbara Roy has done a masterful job of combining all the ingredients of life with dementia into a palatable stew. Under the Bridge Backwards is frank and funny, sad, frightening and redeeming ... in other words, a very human account of an experience none of us would like to have and few of us would handle so well.

I appreciate Barbara Roy's powerful story about her journey as an advocate and caregiver for her husband, Phil. She shares both painful and joyful experiences as her family faces the diagnosis, declining health and finally death of a beloved husband, parent, friend and colleague. I found her insights and strength truly inspirational. I think that this book has an important message, especially for families facing Alzheimer's and other neurological diseases. Thank you, Barbara, for sharing your experience.

This is an extraordinary personal journal describing the complex and difficult journey in honoring the commitment to one's spouse as they together submit to the inevitable deterioration of dementia. The author is exceptionally articulate and insightful as she chronicles the protracted demise of her husband, himself a highly respected and talented surgeon. Barbara is both a brilliant person and a powerful, moving author.

This is a beautifully written account of a heart wrenching journey. Roy's book is an honest portrayal of caregiving a husband with Alzheimer's. It could be a useful guide if you find yourself on a similar path.
