Natalie Whipple has written an engaging story full of intrigue, adventure and excitement,all presented in a surprisingly good semblance of a teenaged boy's voice.

There were times when I got frustrated with the descriptions of Toshiro's mom and dad; pretty much believing in Asian-parent stereotypes so much that he failed to see that his parents were keeping major secrets from him, but I was glad to see that they really weren't as he first presented them.

Whipple did a better-than-usual job of covering her tracks. Lots of authors don't bother with making the nonsensical make sense; for the most part, Whipple gives readers a reason for everything.

I'd previously read Transparent by Natalie Whipple and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was excited when she announced Relax, I'm a Ninja was being released on her blog. I initially thought the book would be a good fit for my teenage son that struggles to find things he likes to read. After a friend told me how much she enjoyed the book I decided to pick it up for myself. At it's heart the book is about finding your place in a world that has expectations of who you should be. It is a theme that is relatable for adults both young and a little bit older.

Relax has great characters that I loved from the beginning. The story is engaging and sucks you in as every great page turner should. Even though I know very little about Japanese culture, Whipple's love for her subject shines through and she is wonderful at helping an uninformed reader, such as myself, understand what is going on without over explaining.

Never thought I'd enjoy reading about ninjas, nerds and high school hormones at the same time, but Natalie Whipple's ability to draw her characters crisply (and without sex scenes, bravo!) makes this a book worthy of anyone's time and attention. Written with the average teen in mind but with plenty of wit and unexpected action (it's like she really KNOWS ninjas!), this is a family story, a "friends til the end" story as well as a soulmate story - with monsters. Just because she can. Well done!

From the awesome title to the very last page, this book kept me hooked. I haven't read a book with a male protagonist in a while and thought Natalie totally nailed Tosh's voice. I loved the slow build of the paranormal element and how Tosh's parents were integral to the story. I loved how the real-world issues - liking your best friend's crush, navigating high school cliques - were addressed realistically and yet also woven into the more fantastical plot points. Amy was a great character too - in fact, the book was full of interesting, strong female characters. Really, I have nothing but good things to say about RELAX, I'M A NINJA. This is the first book I've read by Natalie Whipple and I'm now excited to get the rest of her books. Love the writing style, love the ninjas, love the characters. Just....love!!

I'd never read Natalie Whipple before this, and it was a good introduction to her writing. I've joked with people that it was only a matter of time before a YA paranormal had a magic system based on kissing, but the story's depth and its intelligent characters sell it even without the pulse-triggering scenes. I thought the start was a little bumpy, and it smoothed out after a chapter or two. I will read the next one!

This looked like a fun, quirky young adult book, but right off the bat I was put off by the uncontrolled raging teenage boy hormones. No talk about respecting teenage girls. After the first swear word, I quit reading.

I love this book! I'm not really into the whole "ninja scene" so I was afraid that I wasn't going to enjoy this book. Not a problem, it was such a fun book. It's a great YA book that's nice an clean. I have no worries about passing it along to middle school kiddos. The only problem is it makes me crave sticky rice the whole time I'm reading it!

Relax, I'm a Ninja follows the story of Tosh Ito, your regular run-of-the-mill nerdy high schooler, who happens to be a ninja. Oh, and his father is the clan master ta boot. He works hard to maintain his cover as a D&D playing geek so no one will ever know he actually kicks major booty. Ninja also has a really engaging love story that's very believable. Tosh tries hard not to have a crush on his best friend's crush, but love wants what it wants, and the inevitable happens. The D&D play-by-play of the angry dungeon master taking it out on Tosh was priceless.

The best thing about Ninja, is that it reads just like an anime. The story has action, a little mystery, and a main character who is so utterly teenage boy that I wanna squish him all up. If you like Asian culture, gaming, and fun, I think you'll have a great time tearing through this book.
