By Robert G Yokoyama VINE VOICE on October 11, 2014
Format: Paperback
I have never read a book quite like Dust tea Dingoes and dragons. The book is a collection of letters that Bob Hemphill writes to his father over a period of ten years from June 1991 to July 2001. There is no return correspondence from his father about his experiences in his letters. I would have liked to have read some response from his father just to read his reaction to his son's adventures. Bob Hemphill is a venture capitalist. He has travelled all over the world buying and maintaining power plants that provides energy to millions of people in over forty countries. I don't know anything about power plants. Bob is a hands on type of person. He has patched steam leaks. He has also fixed a part of the plant called the coal crusher and even fixed the fans inside the power plant. I admire anyone who is not afraid to get dirty on the job. I learned a new word from this book. It is the Japanese word called kaizen. The definition of this word is continuous improvement. I feel like I am continuously growing with each new experience that I have. Bob Hemphill is a similar type person. He is always learning from each new place he visits.

Just reading about the things that Bob has experienced in his travels is exciting. Hemphill has attended and watched a passion play in Germany for six hours. I don't know why it is called a passion play, but I am interested in finding out the origin of this. I have never seen a play that had 500 performers. I love to see a play with a cast of this size. This would be a fascinating play to watch. Bob has also played elephant polo and travelled on the back of a camel in India. These are two things that I would love to do. Reading these letters makes me feel like I have experienced these things alongside Bob.

The book’s structure and the author's sense of humor kept me engaged the entire time. I laughed out loud at least two dozen times, and I am not an easy audience. I really enjoyed how he displayed the silliness of his potential VC deals. My favorite, in particular, was the story about the Nobel Prize Applicant/Luke Skywalker and the aluminum beanies that followed.

The nice thing about this book is that it sounds like a bunch of stories the author is retelling to his father, but every now and then he sprinkles in a lesson to be learned.

I would have liked to hear more stories about the early days at AES and some more business related content such as how they negotiated their deals, but that is my selfish MBA side talking. And it also would have been interesting if there were responses from this dad.

Overall, I thought this was a great book and will be recommending it to my buddies. I hope he writes his follow up book on his more recent times at AES Solar.

This book is like nothing I have every read before. Defiantly, do not judge this book by its cover. Bob Hemphill writes hilarious letters to his father about his adventures while building his energy business from 1991 – 2001. Many of the places he visits he needs a translator and that in its self leads to some pretty funny stories. I was amazed at the amount of times he was served some sort of bug for dinner. The camel hoof soup was also a memorable dish.

If I ever get the chance to visit Australia I’ll make a point to visit the bleeding nine hundred-foot rock and of course the acres of wildflowers in the west. If I make it to Germany in 2020 I’ll have to check out the passion play that lasts for eight hours and is only held every ten years.

If you would like a little peak at what life is like in some of the unattractive nooks and crannies of second and third world countries then this book should do the trick for you.

Five stars are not quite enough!

Hemphill's work, 'Dust Tea, Dingoes, and Dragons',
Has pushed us to swilling great flagons:
After reading each letter,
'T'seems naught could be better!
Why, Bob even bests Bilbo Baggins!

This chronology simply astounds,
As wheel-deal backroom thought abounds.
'Though his face belies wrinkles,
His eyes are full twinkles
While studying old business hounds.

The most cogent thought that I've had,
Is his writing borders upon 'mad'...
On AES clocks
His business sense rocks,
And off, he is typing to Dad.

But what an enjoyable read;
Entertainment that most people need;
Fraught with sarcastic
Commental gymnastic,
The prose of this author will feed!

Through R.F. Hemphill’s letters to his father from all corners of the world, the reader is comfortably assailed by impressions of foreign cultures, assessments of business dealings, as well as a bit of familial sentiment. With nearly every page dusted with humor and wry business savvy, this polished anthology will have readers drawing parallels, tangents and even caesuras with their own lives. Read it!

First disclosure- I was gifted a complimentary copy of this book by the La Jolla Writer's Conference and STRATEGIES PR. What I like about this company is that they simply ask you to read the book if you think it will appeal to you, no review is mandatory, but it you choose to mention it somewhere or write that review it is appreciated whether your thoughts are good or negative.

This book for me was not one that I could open and read from cover to cover in one sitting. That is not a bad thing though as I chose to read a few chapters at a time so I could savor the sometimes subtle and more often blatant humor. Bob Hemphill is a high level executive in a newly formed energy company named AES. Their goal was to sell energy plants in newly emerging countries. Not one of the founders had a whole heck of a lot of experience if any in doing this or knowing how it should even be done. This book is mainly an attempt to chronicle their experiences while traveling around the globe trying to get the business off the ground then to manage a wildly successful business with just a few detours into other business ventures.

Sounds like a boring book huh? One you have to slog through? Not so. Each chapter begins as a letter "Dear Dad". These were sent to Mr Hemphill's father, who had some experience in global travel being retired US Air Force and having traveled some with his family during his time in the service.
