This book was impossible for me to put down! I read it in one day. Michael Sweet has written a heart felt biography that gives you insight into his personal life, his triumphs and darker moments with Stryper, and everything in between. He is reflective, intelligent, and extremely open and honest about his experiences. If you're a fan of Stryper, or like his solo records, or you want to read an excellent book that is well written and so much different then the other "rock star" biographies, you've come to the right place. I highly recommend this book!!

I just finished reading Honestly: My Life and Stryper Revealed by Michael Sweet last night. It is a fast read and if I was 20 years younger, I could have stayed awake long enough to read it in one night instead of two.
Like many of the songs Michael has written, there are many layers to the book. I won't try to list them since it would be too big of a challenge. However, I will try to highlight some of them.
Some of the stories Michael shares were painful to read for various reasons. As a fan, I hoped my favorite band is made of a group of friends who agrees on everything and never has a problem. Granted it is an illusion I choose to create, and from what I have read and experienced, I knew better.
The great thing about this book it isn't another "tell all books" written to get even with anyone in Stryper, or the detractors of the band or Michael Sweet's solo career. Instead, Michael reflects on his personal struggles with dealing with the band and various critics. To help the reader understand he writes about a situation but often points a finger at himself for doing or not doing something in that situation. At the same time he isn't into graphic detail of a situation. In many instances you may feel the need to know more. In cases he also admits that he is sharing his perception of a situation and those involved may have another viewpoint.
The book's main theme isn't about struggles and strife however. To me it is about a man growing from a "teenage punk" who didn't care about much of anything, to a mature adult actualizing his responsibilities as a Christian, a father, a member of a band, and a musician/songwriter.
This is even overshadowed by a even larger theme, despite ourselves, God continues to poor his graces upon us and loves us. Great things will happen if we let him have control over our lives. It may not be what we want or expect, but in the end we may realize it was the better path for us.

Wow, what an amazing look into the life of one of my all time hero's! There is so much honesty in the words that fill the pages of this book that I was blown away by it. There are things that for me, that I wouldn't have dared shared with the world if I was is the position that Michael Sweet is in. However, such blunt and brutal honesty has done nothing than that of giving me even more respect for my childhood musical hero. In this book I was given a back stage look into Michael's life and through it was inspired by the fact Michael is just a man like me with faults, far less than perfect...But a man that loves the Lord and seeks to share the love of God through his life and music with those who will listen. If you love, like, or are just curious about the front man of the yellow and black attack that is Stryper...Do yourself a favor and by this book!

My name is Deborah and I love Stryper. My love for this band has spanned the ages. At every walk of life I have kept Stryper with me. High School, graduation, marriage, death, separation, divorce. Stryper has been my constant companion and at times a source of consolation and inspiration.

Michael Sweet is not the guy you think he is. I found this book to be alot of things. Childlike, funny, introspective, inspiring, cathartic and passionate. Michael doesn't hold back. He definitely speaks his mind in this book and at times I was kind of blown away at his honesty. Especially when he talks about his love/hate relationship with Stryper. The book ranges from topics like the beginning days on the Strip, the Enigma days, bad business dealings, dissention in the band, his life after leaving, his solo career, the reunion tour, Boston among other things,

My only negative about this book is that I wish Michael would have been a bit more descriptive in some parts. I would have loved to hear more stories about the Strip days and the Against the Law days leading to his departure of the band which was THE WORST DAY OF MY LIFE! But the 2 must read chapters are of course about Kyle and Lisa.

I laffed, I cried and was left with a newfound respect for Michael Sweet.

I have been trying to buy this book for my boyfriend, who is a HUGE Stryper fan, for over a year, but it's always sold out! I finally got to order it just in time for his birthday. Of all his gifts, this is the one he was most excited about, as he's been dying to read Michael Sweet's story. He's not finished reading the book yet, but his face is buried in this book every night, and he said it's so interesting, and he's learning so much about Michael Sweet that he never knew before. This will probably be his favorite book!

Having just completed reading "Honestly: My Life and Stryper Revealed" for the second time I wanted to take a moment and share my thoughts. I purchased "The Yellow and Black Attack" in 1985 and have been a fan of the band ever since. Stryper's music played a huge role in getting me through one of the most trying times in my Christian faith, and I will always be grateful for that.

Concerning "Honestly" I will first simply say that this is a great read! If you are a fan of Stryper and/or Michael's solo work this is 'must read' material for you. I will share two thoughts - and a word of caution:

1) The book is appropriately named. Michael is very straightforward in sharing the events that shaped the band and his life. In an age where people tend to present themselves in the best possible light, Michael has used this book to be an 'open book' for all to read. His candor can be surprising, but it's also a bit refreshing.

2) I enjoy finding out 'behind the scenes' details about people and bands who have been a part of my life. There are plenty of stories in this book that will give you more than just a 'glimpse' into the early days of Stryper. As soon as I finished the book the first time I listened to "Soldiers Under Command" - with a new appreciation.

However, a word of caution: It's been said that you should never get to know your heroes, because you may see their human side. This book is no exception. Michael states in Chapter 1: "If you've picked up this book in hopes of reading stories about me hiding in a closet shooting up heroin, buying prostitutes with all my earnings...you should probably read the Motley Crüe book instead, because you won't find that here...
