This is the second book in a trilogy about the life of Jelly Bryce, written by Mike Conti. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, which covered Bryce's childhood and early career as a police officer in Oklahoma City during the Great Depression. This second book begins with Bryce being sent an invitation to join J Edgar Hoover's newly formed FBI as a special agent. Leaping at the chance to realize a lifelong dream, Bryce drives to Washington DC.

This book has a harder edge than the first book, which is not surprising since Bryce had been chasing and killing mobsters and bad guys for years at this point in his life. He settles right into his new career by earning the respect of his fellow agents and forming a close, respectful friendship with Hoover. Bryce serves his Bureau by going on assignments in various cities and helping to curtail the mob's activities, and his reputation as a sharp shooting, fast drawing legend grows. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book!

The characters and plot are very realistic, due to the author's own police background and familiarity with guns. I especially liked reading about the firearms used in that era, and about the very first S&W .357 Magnum revolver - a gun that became the standard side arms for police in the following years. My own very first gun was the same one, and I love it dearly.

Bryce is a hard man, lightning quick with his gun and with a predator's instinct for getting inside the heads of the criminals he hunts. However, his love life, like many in law enforcement, is difficult and sad. His only real anchor in life is his family back in Oklahoma, and it's interesting to see the relationship develop between Bryce and his father as he matures.

I typically don't read novels based on true characters. The conversations just typically don't seem believable. This book was a great surprise. I really could not put it down. Interesting all the way through and even lulls in action were of interest in helping to understand the personality of Bryce. I highly recommend this book and have already ordered the second book in the trilogy about this great member of law enforcement.

Jelly Bryce is back!!!! fighting for truth, justice and the American way. After reading Mikes first book I likened it to Indiana Jones chills,spills and thrills and like others waited impatiently for his second book. I was not disappointed at all. Even more in depth but has you rooting for the good guys of old to bring down the bead guys or the evil in our society. Every law enforcement officer or protector of all that is good in this country will empathize with what Jelly has learned from his start in law enforcement to his dream job or ambitions. FBI! the top of the chain , the holy grail. Mike puts us right back in our first day in the uniform to our lofty expectations of changing the world because " a new sheriff is in town". As an accomplished writer he allows us to feel the excitement of being in the prestigious FBI and we feel the awe of sitting down with a bigger than life J Edgar Hoover in a most ostentatious office. WOW can it get any better.
We realize that our predecessors of law enforcement had no book or formal plan fighting the forces of evil. J Edgar made that very clear. But he instilled in his agents a dream or thrill of being part of something so big you could feel the anticipation and the pride. Michael takes us on this journey in a way that is not only fun but informative for any LE. Be it weapons or tactics or hunting his human prey Mr. Contis professional background rings true. We realize that Law enforcement is entering the 20th century and the FBI with Delf Bryce is on the forefront. Armed with minimal training and a badge and gun, they venture from the seat of their pants learning as they go . Their mistakes cost lives and careers and their accomplishments enhance modern law enforcement and the professionalism of the FBI.

The second novel in the Delf "Jelly" Bryce trilogy was my first experience and after this review, it certainly won't be my last!

<Spoiler-free plot summery>
The plot of "JELLY BRYCE: FBI ODYSSEY" revolves around a police detective out of Oklahoma City who finds himself on the shortlist to joining the prestigious Federal Bureau of Investigation under the leadership of J. Edgar Hoover. Quickly rising through the ranks from Jelly's God given talent in firearm expertise, the reader is treated to excellent passages with proper firearm terminology and mechanism of action. The reader is then taken on an exciting journey across the country in the pursuit of the FBI's Most Wanted. Weaving in and out of "off the books operation" and by the "book take downs", Jelly Bryce continues to delve deeper into the gritty 1930s police work. Finally we leave Jelly in El Paso, Texas as a member of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) to setup a sure to please story arc that will conclude in the final book of the trilogy "JELLY BRYCE: THE MAN IN THE MIRROR".
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I look forward to going back and reading "JELLY BRYCE: THE LEGEND BEGINS" to gain even more background information. I would say that my favorite chapter would be chapter 7, the journey to the east coast and the beginning of the transformation of Jelly Bryce Police Detective to right hand G-Man of the FBI. It serves the role to transition the audience and to show what sacrifices are required of Jelly and his fellow agents. One of my criticisms would be although it is given that Jelly has extraordinary reflexes and skill, sometimes it seems a little over the top.
