This in not a novel.
It is very much a text book that should come as part of a class required for Political Science majors. The Bible tells us that the love of money is the root of all evil and this text explains that corruption goes hand in hand with crime and terrorism. It also points to corruption is used and accepted at all levels.
This book is not an easy read.

Dr. Shelley's work is exhaustively researched and clearly defines the relationship between governmental and regulatory corruption, organized crime, nation state aggrandizement, and global terrorism. Dr. Shelley takes the reader through a series of case-studies that cover most if not all of the political hotspots across the globe where organized crime and corruption have directly or indirectly aided and abetted acts of terrorism. Fraud, money laundering and cybercrime are all tools the modern terrorist uses to fund their destructive activities.

This text is especially relevant in these times where we debate privacy versus national security. The world is an inherenlty unsafe place, and what is forming is a triad of criminality that makes the world more so. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in how terrorists fund their activities, and those interested in global criminality, If we are to stop terror groups we need to understand how these groups fun their activities. This books goes a long way to explaining this, and in great detail. This text is well worth the time to read and study.

This well-written, eye-opening book helps put terrorism, transnational crime, and corruption into an alarming but illuminating context for understanding the violence we see on television (and if we're unlucky, in our own neighborhoods) so often these days. I hope the people in power and media talking heads are all reading this book, but every armchair counterterrorism expert commenting relentlessly on Facebook about ISIL/Daesh, al-Qaeda, Boko Haraam, and Latin American narcoterrorists should read "Dirty Entanglements," so they'll understand how terrorism really works, above and beyond the oversimplified soundbite version you get from teevee.

Dr. Shelley first documents the interactions between ideological terrorists, traditional organized crime, and corrupt state and corporate players by analyzing the specifics of major violent attacks. Most involve terror groups that identify as Islamic fundamentalists, including various al-Qaeda affiliates, Hezbollah, PKK, Boko Haraam, and so forth. (She describes Beslan, in Chechnya, as more of a nationalistic terrorist act.) But she also covers the IRA, Yakuza, Italian and US Mafias, Tamil Tigers, FARC, Sendero Luminoso, Aum Shinrikyo, and the ever-changing network of Mexican and Central American cartels running drugs and people throughout the Americas. (This was of particular interest to me.)

She goes on to discuss different aspects of running organized crime and terrorist organizations, in particular funding and logistics. Each densely packed chapter includes lots of interesting, and in some cases actionable, information. For instance, I had no idea how important bootleg CDs were for funding organized crime and terror - I won't be buying those again.Read more ›
