I found this book to be very easy to use, quite sturdy with laminated pages, well constructed in the old Rolodex style, great font size so as not to give you a headache. There are other pocket books with many more formulas and details but those are really not easy to use WHILE working on a project.

There are tips and how-to formulas in here for common project needs such as finding areas, volumes, mix ratios etc. So for example if you are a Do-It-Yourself(DIY) guy and you are working on a concrete sidewalk there is a section on calculating how much concrete you will need. The last page behind the back cover has all the usual conversion factors - inches to feet, square feet to square yards and a few others MOST COMMONLY needed in construction jobs.

This is a handy little tool that is great for construction contractors and Do-It-Yourself guys. Sure all the information here is available elsewhere but having the stuff neatly assembled in one easy to use package is great. Well worth having in your toolbox.

I will keep this in my toolbox. I actually got this for my son to explain how math/geometry can be applied in the real world. In the process, I learned how to calculate concrete slump, board feet and roof underlayment. I also learned how much area can be covered by a bundle of 24" cedar handsplit shakes with a 7" exposure and how much paint I need to buy for two coats on the stucco wall out back.

The formulae are organized well, indexed, and explained in enough detail to use them -- there is at least one example per section to illustrate how they can be used in a real scenario. Where standard measurements are available, tables have been added to simplify the calculations: the quantity of mortar (in cubic feet) required to lay 1000 bricks using a joint thickness of 3/8" and a wall thickness of 8" can be found by locating the intersection of 3/8" and 8" on a provided table without any calculation needed. (11.8 cubic feet are required For masonry cement, simply multiply by 0.5, and multiply by 100 for the amount of sand required. Simple.

Beyond the physical calculations, it also includes some business calculations like "Profit - Markup vs. Gross," a review of basic skills like fractions and rounding decimals (don't do it until the END), and reminders like making sure all of your values are expressed in compatible units (don't attempt to add square feet and cubic feet together ... you won't get anything useful, especially if you don't realize you did that).

One correction for the back page: 1 mile is NOT 1.609 meters (should be 1.609 *kilometers*)

For some reason, I was expecting one of those essential math compendiums that were the norm before calculators and then the internet rendered them obsolete.

But this is an interesting compendium of basic math, some intermediate and mildly advanced math as it applies to the building trades - and a few things that leave you wondering why they are there at all.

The very first rule stated is "ALWAYS USE A CALCULATOR Never add anything in your mind. And you should always perform each complete calculation at least twice. . . ." This is followed by "WRITE IT OUT" and three more elementary rules. I guess it is a help for some people to be reminded of basic rules like put pants on, then shoes.. Actually the rules are excellent and there is no harm in being reminded of them.

There are short reminders of how to use architectural and engineering scale drawings, how to use a tape measure, rounding decimals, converting fractions to decimals and inches to feet, percentages, fractions and volume. These sections taken together are what I thought the booklet would be. They are indeed all here, covered surprisingly well in minimum space.

But there's lot more specific to the construction trades, 27 sections in all for calculating and estimating rebar, brick, mortar, cement and sand and more. There's a refresher on builder's and surveyor's measures as well as calculating excavation slope.

I am not in the construction trades, but I can certainly see the value in having a booklet like this on hand to remind me of what I have forgotten or as a checklist.

Every page is printed on substantial card stock. The layout is clean, the design crisp. The top-edge spiral binding is sturdy. In short, this is a book intended for rough handling in the field.

This DeWalt Quick Check Math guide is almost a god send!

It covered everything from quick and simple mathematical formulas that you tend to forget (or at least I tend to forget) to more complex things such as slope and runs, gravel estimation (per ton and cubic yards calculated by depth), even concrete club, rebar placement/lapping... I mean the info just goes on and on. It even has conversions chart for metric to standard, fraction to decimal, temperature, weight, even speed!

One thing that I was surprised to see is a profit section for calculating markup, something that most people are a bit unsure of or don't know how to do without the aid of a business savvy partner.

There is one thing that I could take off a star for and that is the material that they used. Personally I would have liked a bit heavier duty laminated stock but this is still pretty heavy duty and will last several years of heavy use.

For anyone who does building, either as a profession or as a DIYer (such as myself), this is a great guide to keep handy. Really couldn't ask for more!
