Voice over IP/ Unified Communications (VoIP/UC) is rapidly replacing the legacy circuit switching networks with packet switching networks and providing a whole host of advanced features. However, the following hurdles complicate a seamless transition:
* UC isn't a magic button which solves ever problem. Be careful when you deploy UC that it actually enhances your business model or improves processes Don't do it just because everyone else is doing it. Careless attempts at UC can create expensive disruption to your business. Furthermore, some features as voice telephone and high definition video conferring will impact your IP network in ways you might not expect. Other features may not operate well across services and vendors. Any number of new features could offer ways to change your procedures that will require retaining of staff. While VoIP and UC may reduce overall costs in the long term, it will involve an initial cost which must be amortized by future cost savings.
* The market for UC products and services changes daily and complicates planning. You will have to pick what is best for you from what is available at the time. A book cannot offer the very latest product information--that's what the web does. What this book intends to do is give you an overview of typical products and services, with the basis for judging what you find on the web. From that you can hold up your side of the conversation when speaking with sales and technical people. With a clear understanding you also should be able to respond effectively to the questions and concerns of top management.
* Each vendor bundles its features related to voice, data, messaging and image communications--but that complicates interoperability.

I don't know any more about telephone networks than your average person off the street. I'm not an engineer who works for a telephone company, and I'm not any sort of technical manager who was given a task to look into more efficient ways to run a company. I'm just a guy who has built personal websites and is interested in learning more about how VoIP works. If you're like me, then this book isn't for you -- not by itself, anyway.

I got this book through my library because I couldn't get my first choice of a book on the subject. I wanted to get a book called "VoIP Made Easy: The Ideal Introduction to Internet Telephony". I discovered the book on amazon, but wanted to get it through my library so that I could check it out first without buying it. However, the book isn't nearly as popular as Mr. Flanagan's book and no libraries had it. For this reason, I decided to get the book that I could, more easily, get my hands on; which is this one.

I had viewed the table of contents for both books on amazon, and suspected that this book may not be exactly what I need -- a beginner's book. But because I had nothing to lose, I requested the book via my local library. My suspicion was right. This book isn't for everyone.

The back of the book claims to offer "jargon-free explanations", but it doesn't. As I started reading it, it didn't take me long to realize that this book is written for those who are already familiar with the telephone industry, and how the traditional industry works. Without this knowledge, the book is less-than-ideal since it is written from the perspective of someone who is overly familiar with the telephone industry, and assumes that the reader is also. So what the author deems to be "jargon-free" really isn't.
