I read Brother Chris Hodapp's book during my petition process for a Texas Blue Lodge in order to get a bit more of an understanding of the Fraternity and the goings on with the Craft, its history and legacy. While the book alludes to many of the happenings within a Lodge there are not any of the secrets revealed... so if you're looking for different means of identification or recognition or a map to the hidden treasures then you'll be fairly disappointed in this book

During my Degree work in my Lodge I frequently referenced this book and, to my pleasant surprise, was very accurate in the work I was then engaged upon.

The book is a quick read covering all facets of Masonry: the humble beginnings to the Grand Lodge of England to the Scottish Rite, Shriner's and other appendant bodies. Also covered is a look into other fraternal organizations that are somewhat similar to Freemasonry yet not part of the Craft (e.g. Oddfellows, Elks, Tall Cedars, etc.).

One of the many misnomers of the Craft is secrecy. Are we a so-called "Secret Society"? Well, if we are then we have done a horrible job of remaining 'secret' by having Lodges in virtually every town and city in America; having open websites and are published in phone books; participating in various charitable functions and supporting hospitals and schools. So are we "secretive"? No. We are, however, a group with secrets much like any other fraternal organization.

The book does an excellent job debunking myths about secrecy and hidden agendas... however as long as conspiracy theorists abound we are included in their fodder.

As a recap the book is very well written, engaging and highly informative. The content is relevant and accurate.

This introduction to Freemasonry is written by an Indiana Freemason and the emphasis in on American "regular" Freemasonry. If you have recently become a mason or are interested in becoming a mason, this book provides a great overview of how American Freemasonry works today. In addition, there is a great deal about the history of Freemasonry in Britain and the U.S. and a lot of basic information about orders in other country, including those that are not part of "regular" masonry and what that means.

This book is not a sourcebook for Dan Brown fans who want to delve more deeply into made up mysteries, learn the secrets of breakaway orders or join the Illuminati (though there is a section on how masonry and the Illuminati crossed paths and very shortly went their separate ways). It is also not a guide to doing the rituals so that non-masons can learn all the secrets of what goes on in a masonic temple and set up their own secret societies.

The most disappointing element of this book is its ultimate takeaway: The Masons are an awful lot like the Elks Club, Moose Club or Rotary Club. There are some special rituals that make it more exotic and ancient seeming, but in its modern form it's another club for men seeking to bond with other men to find a place to belong in life outside of work and home. (Note, if you're a woman you will have to join an affiliated order or an irregular order - "regular" freemasonry doesn't permit women.)

The author is a friendly and open spokesperson for Freemasonry, sharing how he got into it, what he gets out of it and why it isn't a big deal the way occult books make it out to be but is a big deal for members who get to know other people from all walks of life and belong to something with a history.

As the Worshipful Master of my lodge last year, I bought one of these for each of my new joins and every one of my new members says it was the best gift ever. I've been a Mason since 2005 and I will admit that I learned more about our fraternity from reading this book than anyone has ever taught me in the past 10 years. Excellent and entertaining read!

To begin with, I am not a Mason. However, I had many questions (prior to reading this book) that have now been addressed to my satisfaction. In fact, it's such a well-written book, that it brought to my attention things that I hadn't considered. It was at a friend's suggestion, who is a Mason, that I picked up this book to understand the fraternity a little bit better. In the simplest terms, Freemasonry is very much a FRATERNITY in the most noblest sense of the word. Unlike the drunken brawls typically associated with college fraternities when the word "fraternity" is spoken, which also summons imagery of a unkempt and dirty "frat houses", Freemasonry, as portrayed in this text, is nothing of the sort.

As you might guess, I am considering petitioning (or asking) to become a Mason, which is something each individual must do of his own free volition. As I understand it, the fraternity does NOT extend an invitation to a man that he join the (local) Masonic lodge or the fraternity as a whole. I like this.

To become a Mason, each man must decide for himself if this is an organization he wishes to associate himself with. Also, does the fraternity/lodge wish to associate with YOU. Are you a "good" man of reputable character and seeking moral and ethical improvement? This thing is a two-way street.

Another major point of concern for me was whether Freemasonry is a religion. It is NOT a religion, but does place emphasis on acknowledgement of God as the supreme guiding force in one's life and that one should keep to the proverbial "straight and narrow" of one's faith (i.e., church, synagogue, etc.
