[Good]

It shows you step by step, visually how to get stuff done in LinkedIn which covers the following general topics:

* Setting up your account

* Building your network of LinkedIn 'friends'

* Communicating with other LinkedIn members

* Searching for jobs

[Ok]

It's not horrible but the screenshots need to be slightly bigger since the audience will most likely be older like my mom.

[Bad]

Websites change a lot faster than normal software apps. I predict this book will quickly become out of date within a few months, if not sooner. When this happens, this book will become very confusing when readers either see something removed, something different, or something completely new which doesn't look like the book's screenshot. This should have been a digital offering instead but then you run into another problem. The people who actually need this book, won't know how to access your content. Would this book being on the iPad (and using Apple's book format) solve this problem (and no, the Kindle e-readers wouldn't be good for this since you really need color screenshots)?

[Verdict]

Anyone who's relatively familiar with the web (i.e. if they can use Facebook or a dating site pretty well) doesn't need this book. I suspect this is targeted more for the geriatric segment of people like my parents.

I guess that comes across as ridiculously reductionist, but it's true. My spouse and adult daughter can't fathom that anyone would need a book like this to understand LinkedIn, but then one is in IT and the other is a veteran of multiple social media formats.

The beauty and niche of Teach Yourself Visually books is the hand holding, the walking along with you step-by-step so you can get an idea where you are heading. If you've placed eBay auction listings or uploaded customer images, say, to an Amazon product page, you are already too sophisticated/experienced for the parts of this book pertaining to the uploading of pictures. That's just a given, and the measure of the book is ultimately how useful it is to people who get "stuck" and need a step-by-step solution early in the learning process, not how useful it might be to a random sampling of LinkedIn users.

I'm a bit analog and appreciate author Lance Whitney's lack of assumptions as to how much the reader knows about LinkedIn, job sites, or social media. Example: I really hadn't considered it as a college scouting tool for my younger children, when the time comes. Others may not realize that while, by default, your 1st degree connections can all see each other, there's an option to make that list private - for your own eyes, only.

"But isn't that stunningly obvious?"

"Yes, once you know that, it is."

So don't be too quick to dismiss this book as being for grandpa and grandma. People who are in career flux, maybe going back to school, taking a real interest in technology for the first time, or who just never got into social media in the first place but now have a professional reason to do so, will benefit from this book.

Like with most tech books in the "Teach Yourself VISUALLY" series this guide is printed in full color with plenty of detailed screenshots on every page and good page flow that allows you to go through the chapters relatively quickly while absorbing the details.

This guide on the nuts and bolts of using the ubiquitous career networking website - LinkedIn - was a bit too basic for my liking but will well serve those who are on unfamiliar/shaky grounds with internet basics. How basic does this book get? The first several chapters will walk users through the entirety of registering a LinkedIn account while providing guidance on nearly every facet one way encounter in this process ranging from how to use your email for account verification to retrieving your password should you forget it along the way. In terms of content and guidance this book is even more basic then the 'Dummies' offering for LinkedIn but still, for those in need of plenty of hand holding this is a great resource that takes no task/process for granted.

This book is filled with useful content on navigating LinkedIn. It gives very serious step by step instructions (with illustrations) on how to make the most out of the LinkedIn experience and the benefits of using it for all kinds of things like job hunting, networking, socializing, etc.

Content is great, can't complain about any of it (other than the quality of screenshots, etc.).

So what's the issue for me? Well, in a nutshell, it's the overall presentation of the book that makes it feel cold and textbook-like. It's just such a blah design, it makes reading it feel heavy and boring. In this case, Yes, I'm judging the book by its cover, its design, and it's overall delivery of the information, which is really bad for a Teach Yourself "Visually" book. I think these "visual" texts can take a lesson from the NOLO guides which are laid out so well.

Great book if you can get beyond the visual "ugly."
