Whether you are considering blended learning an an option are are already knee-deep in it, this is an enlightening and thought-provoking book. Technology and blended learning are not silver bullets for education, but if used thoughtfully can have a significant, positive, measurable impact. Arney maintains the focus on the big (and important) question surrounding blended learning: how can it improve student learning?

I highly recommend this book for all educators. Get your highlighter (real or electronic) ready!

Ever find yourself thinking, "I bet I could learn something from people that have been at this whole blended learning thing for a few years and are doing it well"? Look no further, this is THE book on thoughtfully incorporating instructional technology into your classroom and your school. Here is what I love about Liz's work:

1.) Extremely practical - This is a book for the people in the arena by one of our own. This is a book about the "how". Liz spends a tremendous amount of time on the nitty gritty details that will make the difference between success and failure. She ends with ~70 pages of resources from her organization, Aspire. If you want a treatise on the theoretical promise of technology in schools, look elsewhere. If you want to learn how to DO the work, purchase this book.

2.) Process, process, process - Liz could have easily written a book entirely about what Aspire does. Here's the hardware we use, here are the software programs we like, etc. As she discussed in an early chapter, people often ask her for that stuff with some variant of "tell me what to do." Fortunately, it appears that she purposely avoids prescriptive recommendations. No one size fits all solution here. Instead, she walks you through the process that you should follow. She even concedes that technology may not always be the best solution. How many millions of dollars have been wasted by people looking for shortcuts and ignoring the central idea of this book - that your school's use of technology needs to be grounded in an instructional problem your school is trying to solve?

3.) People - For a book about technology, Go Blended spends a lot of time talking about people. I had to force myself to really engage with the chapters about change management.

I found myself underlining, highlighting, flagging this book like crazy and am so excited for those with whom I work to read it as well!

Go Blended! is thoughtful, thorough, practical, and inspiring. Liz Arney has shared her important learning in a way that makes the lessons she learned applicable to all of those involved or looking to get involved in this work. The interviewing of other practitioners in the field adds credibility to her experience and speaks to the relevance of her learnings and the importance of collaboration.

In addition to being incredibly approachable and readable, a great strength of this book is its comprehensive nature. While some writing in the field focuses more on one aspect (either on planning, or the technology, or on practitioners), Arney examines and expounds on all of the integrated pieces of the work. Knowing the particulars of how various components operate and fit together strengthens the work. The smart thinking shared in Liz Arney’s book will help to push and support systems, schools, districts, and educators in this important work.
