I've been a fan of Nancy Tillman since I came across On the Night You Were Born while browsing at my local bookstore. Its celebration of the uniqueness of every child, told in lovely language, has made it the gift I choose most often for expectant or adoptive parents. I also share it regularly with my own grandchildren and talk with them about how special they are. Tillman feels that the most important message for children to receive is simply, "You are loved." That message is core to my other favorite from Tillman's published works, Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You. It its pages, children are assured that, no matter how far from home they go or what they do, they will be loved.

In Tumford the Terrible, Tillman goes in a slightly different direction. The message of unconditional love remains, but the story is more humorous, focusing on Tumford Stoutt, the beloved cat of Georgy and Violet Stoutt. Tumford seems to possess a certain carelessness - or perhaps he simply jumps into situations without considering the consequences. Either way, a trail of muddy footprints, broken dishes and spilled paint are likely to follow in his wake. The mishaps can't shake Georgy and Violet's love for their cat (because "love isn't measured in muddy galoshes or broken tea dishes or trampled-on squashes. No, love is a thing that just happens, you see... like the way I love you and the way you love me"). But the Stoutts are saddened by Tummy's inability to apologize when his actions cause destruction of one sort or another.

I bought this for my 27-month-old grandson. He loves cats and he loves to have me read to him. From the first moment we sat down to read it, he was captivated by the colorful pictures and adorable story. I was afraid it might be a little too long for him at his age, but he was attentive until the very end. And, of course, as we saw pictures of new things he pointed and asked, "What's that?" The story line of Tumford learning how to apologize is great too. Lessons taught with warmth, love and laughter really sink in. The next time I was over at his house, the book was on his bedside table...telling me it was a favorite!

Fabulous, lively illustrations. Beautiful rhyming text. Great "I love you no matter what but try to do the best you can" message.

I would love to love this book. But is it just me or does it seem like a page or two is missing? Jumping from living in a village to measuring love. It just is missing something. I keep thinking we got a misprint that pages were forgotten but I don't think so. It just doesn't gel. It jumps around with verses not relating to the next one. It's weird. My kids like it ok but don't love it and neither do I. I just can't get over the fact that every time I read it I feel like a page is missing here and there because it just doesn't flow.

The story is a little slow for my two year old who looses interest half way through but very loved by my mischievous five year old who, I think, can relate to Tumford quite a bit! One of the story's multiple underlying messages, that one is loved irregardless of a child's trouble making tendencies, is perfect for our little family. It's also an excellent bonding book! I've already pre-ordered Nancy Tillman's sequel entitled, "Tumford's Rude Noises."

As cat owners, we have high standards for cat books and cat illustrations. Tillman's books usually have such incredible illustrations that I felt this book's were a disappointment. While I thought this book was okay (a cat refuses to say he's sorry), it paled in comparison to my expectations. A better cat book is, "Sneakers the Seaside Cat", which was written by Margaret Wise Brown of Goodnight Moon fame, but apparently illustrated by a woman only recently, after Brown's death. That illustrator is Anne Mortimer. The sample pages on Amazon do not really do justice to the illustrations in that book. There is one picture in that book of a cat's profile where you can see into its eye with great clarity and it's quite remarkable. That book also has a funny tiny song at the end that my children enjoy singing. Sneakers, the Seaside Cat

A beautiful children's book about misbehaving, and how children are still loved despite the mistakes they make. The illustrations help bring the story of adorable Tumford, a kitten who misbehaves despite good intentions, to life. I'm looking forward to new books starring Tumford; the children I read this to easily relate to Tumford's struggles, and can't wait for more adventures!
