Bought a number of books by this author. My 2nd grade grandson loved all of them. His teacher said she likes this author and illustrator as well. My grandson has a good sense of humor, so plenty of belly laughs reading these books.

Title: "What Body Part is This?"
Author(s): Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton
Publisher: Feiwel and Friends/MacMillan
Ages: 8+
Rating: 5

Review: By far one of the cutest nonsensical books ever written, "What Body Part is This?" is in a league by itself. I actually laughed out loud while reading it at some points until my sides hurt.

A genuine mix of .1% fact and 99.9% fiction this book is great for kids 8 and up. It's fun and silly and even gives a few interesting ideas on how to get rid of germs. For instance, did you know that if you mixed a teaspoon of gravel and whiskey and drank it down that it could cure a sore throat? Sure thing! Apparently, one of the author's grandfather's figured that one out. I'm sure it was likely Andy Griffiths grandfather too. The germs get drunk off the whiskey and have a rock fight and kill each other! How ingenious is that?! That's only one example of the wonderful humor found in this book. I definitely recommend for middle grade readers.

Reminiscent of the illustrated high school Cartoon Guide to Genetics, this is sort of a gross-out young reader version of The Complete Manual of Things That Might Kill You: A Guide to Self-Diagnosis for Hypochondriacs.

The Introduction cautions that the content is "100 percent fact free" and that is very nearly the truth. Any education which transpires after reading this book surely must be coincidental. The humor is sophomoric, and the (mis)information may actually stymie learning, at least for the relatively young recommended reading audience (starting in grade 3). How are eight-year-olds expected to get the hardy-har-har from the Spinal Cord entry: "Spinal Cord were a stupid heavy metal band"? (Obviously hoping for a laugh from the Spinal Tap crowd, but not even every adult will get that joke.)

The Australian author/illustrator team has worked together previously (Killer Koalas from Outer Space and Lots of Other Very Bad Stuff that Will Make Your Brain Explode) so perhaps fans of theirs will buy this. Even if they do, the potty jokes will get old fast, and the concluding sentence which appears in virtually all of the sixty-eight chapters will get tiring after number four: "That is all there is to know about...hands/hearts/larynxes*/etc."

* The actual word is larynges, but I guess that's another fact this book won't teach you.
