I was looking forward to Patrick Kincaid's story, but this was not at all what I was expecting. The story was short, Elle was irritating, and the resolution between the two of them was not settled until the end of the SECOND short story in the book. I'm not a fan of short stories; I always feel like I'm being short-changed. I was expecting a full-length novel, but instead I got two short stories - neither of which actually took up 100% of the book. There was at least 20% of a preview for another book and a promo for yet a different book.

All in all, I'll keep buying Ms. Brennan's books, but I was pretty disappointed with this one.

I love how the author wove several tales into one coherent story. I have read all of her books, and so I really enjoyed reconnecting with many characters from previous books. This book kept a running level of suspenseful tension which had me unable to stop reading it. Although the story was set in the days leading up to Christmas, it is not a typical holiday book. It was a great anytime read. Lucy and Sean had great chemistry as always, and I can't wait to read their next story. I was also thrilled to finally have a happy ending for Lucy's super awesome brother, Patrick. I love this series.

Every time I read an Allison Brennan book, I swear it's my favorite and Cold Snap is no exception. This novel is broken into three parts with three different story lines happening simultaneously. The first part features Patrick Kincaid which lets us finally get to know him a bit better. The second part features Lucy and Kate and is a bit lighter than the first part.with some humor and the third part features Lucy and Carina. I was glad to have Carina back again. All three mysteries are interesting, suspenseful and gripping. But my favorite part of this book is that we get to see so many personal relationships at work - Patrick and Elle, Lucy and Kate, Lucy and Carina, as well as Lucy with her father, her sister Nelia, and ex-brother-in-law, Andrew. I love when the whole family is together because the Kincaids are one of the best fictional families I've ever wished I was a part of. Maybe they can adopt me :)

I enthusiastically look forward to a new Allison Brennan book. Cold Snap is her latest and I enjoyed it very much. The paperback edition I read included a bonus story, Reckless, which was previously only available as an ebook.

Cold Snap contains three stories cleverly interwoven, featuring her beloved Kincaid family as they travel home for Christmas. In her Forward, Brennan reintroduces some of the family members for any new readers who may not have read the books leading up to this one. Which is helpful since the first Kincaid book was Speak No Evil in 2007. However, you do not have to read the other books to first to enjoy this one. But if you enjoy this book, I would recommend going back and starting at the beginning to follow the Kincaids through their adventures.

The first story takes place in San Francisco on December 22 and actually has very little of her protagonist, Lucy Kincaid. Other than a few phone conversations with Lucy or her boyfriend, Sean Rogan, she is absent. Instead the story focuses on her brother Patrick Kincaid. (Finally! I am sure I am not the only reader who is happy for Patrick to get his day in the sun.)
From Amazon:
“On his way home to San Diego, P.I. Patrick Kincaid takes a detour through San Francisco to check on the wellbeing of a family friend who’s mysteriously been unreachable. What he doesn’t expect is to be shot at before he can find out why attorney Elle Santana won’t ask the police for help in finding a missing girl. Soon, he’s on the run from both good guys and bad as he and Elle race to find the witness and take down a sweatshop run by a corrupt businessman with a penchant for violence.

As much as I usually love Allison Brennan's books, I didn't enjoy this one as much. The book is divided into three separate novellas, rather than a cohesive story. Unfortunately, the storylines are very similar to previous books.

First we have the story of Patrick Kincaid, who was asked by his mom to check in on an old family friend. Elle is the little sister of Patrick's former high school sweetheart and daughter of Patrick's mom's best friend. Elle is all grown up now and she is a pro bono attorney. She's trying to take down the usual suspect, a wealthy businessman who probably is doing something illegal (see any previous Lucy story and replace the wealthy businessman with a politician.)

Elle, of course, eschews all help from the police and chooses to put herself into danger (see some Lucy stories as well as Kate's story, and also novels by lots of other writers.) Patrick is determined to help, though, and not just because he wants justice to be served. He feels alive for the first time since his coma after Lucy's rescue.

Elle is not a great character. There's no reason to root for her, really. She is headstrong, but in an annoying way. And Patrick's attraction to her just doesn't seem organic. It seems forced.

While Patrick is assisting Elle, he receives a text from Lucy and Sean that they have found a dead body and are holed up in Colorado. For a moment, I thought I had missed a Kindle single where that storyline was covered, but instead, it's the second novella.

First of all, I get that Lucy and Sean are always going to be solving crimes, but really, it's beyond ridiculous that every vacation turns into a murder mystery.
