It doesn't surprise me that a memoir about Judy in the early sixties, as told by someone "who was there", is loaded with pills and wine. It doesn't surprise me that Garland was emotional, needy, and mercurial. What does surprise me, is how unkind she comes across and how ungenerous. Whatever I've read about Garland's neediness, it's always been coupled with the fact that her generosity was equal to her need. So many people have spoken about what a giving stage partner she was, a giving friend, thoughtful to her fans, and her staff. Incidentally, her household staff, her chorus dancers, and collaborators which could certainly tell tales, have proven to be fiercely loyal to her.

So why does Stevie Phillips lack this loyalty? Why does she speak of such callous treatment from Garland? I was confused. First, let's assume that what she says is factually true, as much as 40 year old memories can be; skewed, somewhat callous, and definitely biased, but true. Well, think of Stevie from Garland's perspective.

Stevie Phillips was not Garland's Agent (responsible for booking Garland, promoting her, negotiating her appearances) in spite of what some of the press has claimed. She was not her personal assistant (someone Garland hired, whom she trusted and depended on to help with her daily life) as has also been claimed. She was a hired hand from Garland's talent agency making sure she got to her appointments. She was someone who served, and reported stories back to CMA. Surely the agency's very desire for someone to keep her on track, and the fact that they didn't care to do it themselves would stir up resentment. Phillips was forced upon Garland, and even if she eventually came to depend upon her and confide in her, there was never any forgetting that she couldn't be trusted.

When someone writes a memoir, there is almost always a display of photos of the author with the famous people they mention in the book. Not in this one! That automatically took three stars from my review. No photos? A Hollywood/Broadway agent who represented Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Al Pacino, and other dignitaries doesn't have one polaroid of her with them over the years? Very, very strange.

First of all, I consider myself a little knowledgeable about Show Biz as my daughter was an actress at one time and my godfather was an Oscar-winning lyricist. I have never heard of Stevie Phillips.

Her book could have easily been an E-book and spared thousands of trees for humanity. It is a total hatchet job on her clients and friends (?) and sounds like the rantings of a bitter woman.

If you cherish the memory of Judy and care about Liza, skip this book. Big deal, Al Pacino auditioned for a Broadway musical early in his career and forgot the words to 'Luck Be A Lady Tonight' Glad she got such giggles from watching his performance during the audition. Would love to have been on the other end of the line during their conversation when he read the story. Like Al, I am asking, "Why, Stevie, why?!!"

Although she is a few years older, I, too, went to secretarial school and worked in show biz as a secretary. However, unlike her, I was not a native New Yorker, did not have contacts in the business, and did not share the same ethnicity of her and all of my employers. But I plodded along and had great jobs and thoroughly enjoyed the 48 years I worked in the field, here in the US and overseas.

I received this book as a very unwanted gift. I've read it and literally threw it away afterward. This book is self-serving and spiteful, full of malice and hatred for a woman that was well known for her humanitarianism to disabled children (her contributions to March of Dimes, Children of Thalidomide, Polio, etc.) as well as to the men and women of the armed forces.

Judy Garland may have been a "diva's diva"; created by those around her who catered to her while they had both hands in her pocketbook, keeping her off balance in assorted tawdry evil ways. Judy Garland was a multi-tiered, multi-dimensional genius of a caliber rarely seen to this day.

Was she perfect? Probably not. Was she difficult? Most likely. Is her legacy to be one of obloquy? It shouldn't be. Must not be. If you must read this debacle of pond scumesque rhetoric rent it from a library or just read the freebie bits you can find online. You'll get a gut full of this author's sour life perspective and save yourself a few dollars. They'll be better spent on one of Judy Garland's legendary Lp's such as Judy At Carnegie Hall: Fortieth Anniversary Edition

Memoirs are one of my favourite forms of literature,so I was very disappointed with this one.The author is so bitter,so unforgiving and so downright nasty. She seems to have a huge chip on her shoulder, and I began to doubt her and wonder if she was a reliable witness to the events she relates. In fact,I came to actively dislike her.Not recommended.
