This book. Was everything I wanted and more.

Pride and Prejudice with super powers. That's what it is. Described as Jane Austen meets X-Men. Well that is a perfect description. And I loved it.

You know that feeling you get when you have to put down a book to do something. But you get itchy and antsy and keep thinking, "Ugh I just want to go back and read!" All the while you can't stop thinking about the book. Yes. That is the feeling I got while reading These Vicious Masks.

This is the first book in a new trilogy. And while there wasn't a huge cliffhanger, I absolutely cannot wait until the next book comes out. I don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling it. The synopsis does a really fantastic job. But I will say that there were twists I wasn't expecting and a swoon-worthy love interest.

These Vicious Masks went above and beyond anything I could have expected. As a lover of Austen novels, this was the perfect read for me.

Overall
I am absolutely in love with this book. I cannot wait until the second comes out. If you like Jane Austen novels and novels with a slight fantastical twist this one is for you.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I have always loved books set in 19th century England, so I was very excited to read These Vicious Masks. This young adult novel is a collaboration between debut authors Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas.

Evelyn Wyndham is a bright and lively young woman. One evening, she attends a party at a neighboring estate with her family. On the way, they see something quite extraordinary, and then at the party, they are introduced to their host’s brooding nephew Sebastian. The next morning, Evelyn’s sister Rose is missing from her bedroom. It appears that she left in a hurry, and perhaps under duress.

Evelyn’s parents want to avoid a scandal, so they are reluctant to report that their daughter is missing. However, they did not consider that Evelyn cares more for her Rose than for her own reputation. And so, without the assistance of her parents, Evelyn travels to London to track down her missing sister. She is determined to find her sister, but polite society frowns upon young women venturing to certain parts of the city. Fortunately for Evelyn, she has the assistance of several friends who are willing to help travel to those unsavory locales in search of Rose, and more importantly, the truth about why she was taken.

I cannot say anything more without beginning to give too much away, and even if I began to reveal what transpires on Evelyn’s trip to London, it would be difficult to believe. Needless to say, the tagline “Jane Austen meets X-¬Men” is most appropriate. This book has it all: a love triangle, phenomenal abilities, intrigue, mystery, and much more.

This book was so much FUN! I adored the main character Evelyn. She was a blast and everything you'd want in a friend and her inner dialogue was hilarous! This story has a little bit of something for everyone. It's hard to write a spoiler free review but I think that even if the blurb doesn't appeal to you that you should really give the sample a chance because you won't be able to put it down and will end up hooked right away like I was. The plot and all of characters are well developed and interesting. There is action and suspense to keep you turning those pages. There are also two very swoon worthy guys. One more so than another but I really liked them both for different reasons. The book ends really well as it leaves you wanting the next book badly but not exactly hanging on the edge of a cliff plus it feels like these characters' adventures are just beginning! These two authors have written such a addicting, exciting, absolutely enjoyable debut. I can't wait until the next book!!!

AHHHH! It's not a stand-alone book, which means I now have to wait for the rest of the story!

I bought this almost on a whim, liking the idea of Jane Austen meets X Men, but not expecting much, and was SO pleasantly surprised. The whole beginning of the book is just plain fun, with witty banter and flirting, so is really appealing to fans of historical romance. Then the book turns more serious and philosophical and becomes enjoyable on a completely different level.

Honestly, there was not that much romance in it, so don't let that stop you from buying it if you are not a romance fan. I can usually see plot twists and surprises a mile away (this happens when you are an adult reader of YA), but this book fooled me. I was surprised by the sophistication of the writing style and loved how the theme of "masks" is explored.

I am eagerly awaiting more of the story and wanting Evelyn to get together with her love interest. I can't wait to see what new powers we will encounter in the next book. I think the biggest compliment you can give a book is that, once you are finished with it, you want to start reading it all over again immediately. This book is definitely one of those!
