Format: Hardcover
I bought this book several years ago, and must admit that this is one of the most useful books among thousands that I own, and I always keep it close by. Although written almost fifty years ago, the book has not lost at all its relevance. The title of the book is more modest than necessary and in that sense less helpful. A more helpful title could be obtained by replacing the first half ("The philosophical impact of") by "The fundamental incompleteness/inadequacy of".

This is not the place for a detailed review, but it suffices to say that this is probably the best book in its genre: a VERY CAREFUL discussion of the inadequacy of all basic physical concepts (space, time, motion, mass, particle, etc). He carefully documents how the original physical concepts have gradually morphed into completely new concepts but retained the old names, contributing thus to a misleading 'unified' view of physics. Incredibly clear! It is not surprising that, not being a professional physicist (he was a professional philosopher with a master's degree in physics), the author does not propose an alternative foundation for physics, except to point to "events"--instead of "objects" or "particles"--as the fundamental starting concept.

Some of my favorite parts: chapter 9, last section in ch. 13, last section of ch. 16, ch. 18.

Highly recommended to all lovers of science, but especially to those few exceptional young mathematicians, physicists, and scientists in general, who are brave enough to initiate the rebuilding of physics/science on a completely fresh basis. However, one point should be kept in mind throughout: the author still considerably underestimated the radical nature of the formal machinery (new math.) required to implement the changes in science at which he is hinting.
