That number – 22- haunts me. Twenty-two veterans kill themselves every day. Alex Woodward touches on some of the problems of veterans and their families. This book brings to the surface many emotions…about Vietnam and conflicts afterwards. The contents are not completely the letters of a daughter to a father that served before she was born, but many are also the observations and feelings of the author.

Those of us who served in Vietnam remember the experiences he tells about… of being spit upon, of no respect given to your uniform or as a soldier, especially if you were a ‘ground pounder’, with short hair in a long hair era. “A national disgrace that never should have happened”. The book can bring to the surface emotions about Vietnam and veterans today – those that serve and loves lost

One of the elements it touches upon, without really stating it, is a reality of years past- a reader can see what no soldier today or their families can imagine- that of a world where e mails and satellite phones do not exist. It was a world where letters meant everything both to the soldier and their loved ones back home. It was a time where you did not mark the day off of a calendar until you received a letter, maybe written a week or 2 before. A paper letter gave you the smell and personal touch of handwriting.
Alex Woodard’s words mix together the feelings and letters of a time past and of times today and also the veterans he meets.

This book is a must read (and a must listen), it touched me so deeply and so profoundly that I know that it has changed my life forever. Thank you Alex for your honest and heartfelt book, every person should be required to read it - it would change the world if they did.

I had a very difficult time getting into this book/story/memoir. I am not sure why - the forward too long, the author's connection to Jennifer not palpable, too much from Alex's POV... However, this shifted for me when I did add in the accompanying CD. It definitely made the difference and is worth digging out an optical drive for.

I will say that Woodard's writing style is a bit tricky to navigate - held me back quite a bit from immersing myself in Jennifer and her parents story. However, I love books surrounding letters ala Griffin and Sabine being one of the most memorable books of my youth. However, in For the Sender, the juxtaposing to the other stories of Vietnam was disconcerting and took away from Jennifer's story in a way that might not have if the book had been written in her voice.

However, that is not what Alex Woodard does - and what he does well, he does really well - and that is take other people's stories and put them to music.

Bottom line: The words are an accompaniment to the music and not the other way around. If you can get past that and into the book, it is deeply moving and something I wish I could have shared with my grandfather. So, yes, I recommend it - and I recommend if you are struggling to get into it - you might have forgotten to press play.

FOR THE SENDER is a poetic read. A carefully woven story about war and both the soldiers who fought and the people who fill their lives there and here, in the past and in the present. It's a relatively quick read although you might find yourself pausing and thinking about something that was written.

For me these pauses came as I considered the Vietnam vets and how we really failed them as a society. These young men came back to be ignored and shunned. I was too young at the time to understand this or do anything about it, but it bothers me none the less. The story creeps into the present with our current vets and it scarcely seems that we do enough now either. It might be time to get some congressmen/women who can do more than work their jaws. But I digress...

FOR THE SENDER would be a very good choice for a book club read. It's a different sort of read and one of those books where every reader won't end up on the same page. You life experience and where you are in your life now will sort of determine what you 'get' from this book. It's a story of searching and finding.

This is an unusual way of telling a story and teaching some valuable lessons. The idea of sending letters today to your younger father, in response to the letters he wrote your mother while away at war took me a minute to wrap my brain around, but then it added depth to the entire book. The author weaves other stories from other vets into the chapters, sharing their experiences and resulting nightmares after Vietnam as well as how they have coped since the war. I really loved the photographs throughout, they connected me to the stories more than the music actually.

I did find the pacing a bit... bouncy in places. For the Sender is a book worth reading and these men have stories, histories that need to be shared and remembered. The information about Post Traumatic Stress is as valid for our soldiers today as our veterans of wars long over.

Alex Woodard 'For the Sender' series has always been an interesting experiment. A blending of heartfelt music and passionate reading to create an emotional experience. Love Letters from Vietnam is yet another success in this series. I received a copy of the book from the author, and loved it so much that i had to review it.

The book is about the letters sent during the Vietnam war between a soldier, his wife and this daughter. It's a well written and emotional journey that fits well with the music playing in the background. The story of Sergent Fuller is interesting, exciting, and sad all at once. It's fantastically paced and offers something new and interesting to keep you reading along.

With Christmas coming up, i think this will make a great gift for the veteran in your life, or just as a way to honor the ones that lost their lives in order to save ours.
