Awakening is a captivating story about a woman named Claire. Claire is in a horrible state. She has just separated from her boyfriend of 14 years. But the problem in the relationship wasn't him, it was her. She was the abuser, she was the initiator. Claire doesn't know what is wrong with her. She thinks she is sick. After isolating herself, she takes a dive and joins a bookclub at her local bookstore. When there, she notices the very handsome and aloof owner, Evan. But she doesn't know that he has noticed her as well. They both are full of pain and are more alike than they realize. They both have a taste for BDSM, but while Evan is experienced, Claire is just now discovering who she is and what she wants.

This is definitely quite different from other erotic books I have read. I really liked that Sallinger changed up the dynamics a bit. Claire was in an abusive relationship where she was the abuser. She didn't physically abuse her ex, but provoked him to the point so that he would abuse her. She knows how sick it sounds and she can't find the words to explain it to anyone. But while at the new bookstore, she finds a new passion for erotica and her eyes are opened. She is finally starting to understand what she might need. I loved being on this journey with Claire. We see her transition from a woman afraid of herself and her own shadow to a woman who wants her life back and is willing to become the woman she should be.

I really loved Claire and her journey. But I also really enjoyed Evan and his journey. Evan is a Dom who gave up after he lost his wife and sub, Marianne. She sadly has lost her life to cancer and he is now a lost man. All he knows now is his bookstore. Things change when he sees Claire, however, and he doesn't like it one bit.Read more ›

Book Store owner and Claire, a girl that wants to be dominated in the bedroom, are a perfect match. I like how Evan showed Claire and guided Claire on what it is like in the BDSM community. Evan and Claire learned a lot from each other with a little bit of shyness ( Claire) and a whole lot of honesty (Evan) and a WHOLE lot of sex on each of their parts. With the love and understanding of Claire, Evan was able to love her and put the ghost of his wife to bed.

There were many aspects of this story that really intrigued me. First off in the initial scene, Claire is venturing out for the first time after over coming a heart break. The first place that she chooses to re-enter society is a book club at a local indie book store. Slowly she is able to start developing friendships there and start picking up pieces of her broken heart. Claire had broken up with her long term boyfriend and she felt she was to blame. Claire found herself having a need to treated roughly to be intimate. Her boyfriend after much persuasiveness gave into her need but it ended up destroying him emotionally an mentally. Feeling that she was abnormal for having the desires she did, Claire turned to her love of books to not feel alone.

As she discovering the world of BDSM through literature, her desire for more knowledge became apparent to the book store owner Evan. But his interest in her book choices was more involved than that of a warm blooded male having a reaction to a woman reading erotica, but more to do with the fact that he was a former Dominant. Noticing her desire to learn more about the BDSM culture he starts leaaving more and more books out for her, in places he knows she will find them.

Evan want to help Claire learn the ropes of BDSM but is scared to fall for her emotionally. Evan lost his wife and former submissive a few years back from an illness and before she died he made a promise to not fall for anyone again. Torn between protecting Claire and keeping his promise to his ex-wife. Seeing how devoted that Evan is to his ex-wife was beaututil and I was eager to learn more about their past relationship. This was a beautiful story about second chance love and I loved reading and getting to know about these characters.

This book made me want to jump into the pages and talk to the characters. I loved it!!! I couldn't put it down. I loved Claire and Evan. They were a perfect match for each other but just couldn't tell each other. With the "Dominance/Submissive" teaching looming in the background, it was driving both of them crazy. When they finally come together, it is healing for both of them in MANY ways.

It was a very slow beginning and I thought about not continuing, but it finally got to where it needed to be to engage me in the story and then it was over. It felt like it was missing something. Still, it was good.

Really enjoyed how this story showed how a relationship can heal past hurts. This was a great way to show how BDSM really is for some people. It involves so much more besides just Dom and sub. Definitely recommend to others.

I wasn't sure I was going to review this on my blog. This site tends toward young adult with the occasional younger book thrown in. But, I realized I'm a grown adult and I think most of my readers are as well.

I've read a few BSDM books. Some of it really is hard for me to take. But, this one was presented in a very 'tasteful" fashion. I think it would be good for those easing themselves in the genre. I really liked Claire. It's interesting to me that she came from a very abusive relationship. While you constantly hear of women who claim they deserved their beatings, Claire actually craved it. But, she never recognized that it was delivered in the wrong context. It wasn't until her relationship is long over that she realized what it was she wanted. But, these types of relationships take care and consideration. They aren't to be entered into lightly.

I understood that Claire had an intense attraction to Evan. But I was a little disappointed that she agreed to his terms. I know she realized that she was not a replacement for his deceased wife, but Evan never realized that. It was like he refused to see Claire for herself. In turn, he was denying himself what he really wanted. If her recognized Claire as a true submissive, he was doing her a great disservice by treating her the way he did.

I'm happy they finally admitted what they both needed. I liked that this book was not just about the BSDM lifestyle but about the dynamics of the relationship.
