What would you do if you dared your friend to do something that hurt or killed them? This is a fast read book. I liked the plot. But the characters were a little off. It seemed like anyone of them could have done it. It wraps up with an answer but no real explanation.

When Bryn dares her best friend Erica to jump off a cliff into the water with her, she never imagines Erica won't emerge from the water. Trying to cope with her guilt and loss, she turns to drugs and alcohol before ending up in rehab. Months later, after Erica has been declared dead, Bryn starts in a new school in a new town determined to keep a low profile until graduation. Then she starts receiving texts from Erica's old account, texts from someone who knows about THE DARE and who knows private things about their relation only Erica could know. Is Erica alive? Is Bryn delusional? Or is there another explanation.

THE DARE's premise is more interesting than this not so thrilling psychological thriller. When I pick up a psych thriller, I expect a fast paced, tension filled read. I expect to want to stay up late into the night, reading just one more chapter until I stay up way too late and finish. But THE DARE never grabbed me in a way a good thriller does. I had a difficult time engaging with Bryn, in part because because she was weak character, depressed and aloof. She didn't have much of a personality, which is understandable for a depressed person, although blah characters are boring. I didn't dislike her, but rather then sharing her journey, I wanted to push it forward. Her classmates and friends felt a bit stereotypical, but also realistic and interesting. Jayne did a great job giving each a distinct personality.

Hannah Jayne is a writer with much potential. THE DARE is a much cleaner, better written novel than SEE JANE RUN, the first book I read by Jayne. I didn't realize Jayne had written both, or I probably would have never picked up THE DARE. I'm so glad that I did, because I did enjoy the book and mildly recommend it.

The Dare is a chilling story about Brynna dealing with the fact that after she and her best friend, Erica, jumped off a pier, only Brynna came back up. Brynna feels responsible, to the point that she started drinking and drugging. Her family put her in rehab, sent her to a shrink, and even went so far as to move into a new house and send her to a new school. So, there we are.. fresh start. No one in this new town knows what happened, so Brynna can start to heal and move forward. Or can she? Someone hasn’t forgotten and won’t let Brynna forget either. Is Erica still alive? Her body was never found, so it’s possible. Or is it some twisted prank someone is playing?

I really liked this story. It kept me guessing at every turn, and that always keeps me moving forward. The Dare was reminiscent of stories I’ve seen in movies, but the authors writing really sucked me in and I was able to disconnect from that after a while. The pacing wasn’t always perfect, but it was good enough to keep me interested. I connected with Brynna on some level, probably in the way that I would be scared to death if the same thing was happening to me, which continually nudged me on to solve the mystery. I didn’t like Teddy, Brynna’s love interest, much. He was a one dimensional character in my opinion. But I seriously loved Evan to bits! He may have been my favorite character in the entire story.

The Dare is a good read for fans of thriller and suspense. I will definitely be checking out more books by Hannah Jayne.

17-year-old Brynna is starting at a new school in a new town, after her best friend Erica drowned during a dare.
Someone is stalking Brynna though, and she’s scared that it may be Erica.
What is going on? Is Erica really gone? And who is out to get Brynna and why?

This was an okay story, but I wanted answers a lot faster than we got them.

Brynna was an okay character. I could see why she’d be traumatised over her friend’s death, and I thought her behaviour was pretty typical of someone grieving. I did feel a little sorry for her, over what had happened, but I could also see why she would blame herself.

The storyline in this was okay, but I did find it dragged. I was pretty bored by the time I got to the second chapter, and while I wanted to know what happened, I also wanted to know what was going on a lot quicker than we found out. The story just didn’t suck me in, and I lost interest really quickly. Considering that the book was less than 300 pages, I don’t think it should have felt like it dragged quite as much as it did.
There was a touch of romance, but it also didn’t interest me.
The ending was okay, but more than anything I was glad that we had answers, and the book was over, I will say that there was a bit of an open ending though, as though the author had left it that way in case she decided to write a sequel.
Overall; okay story, but dragged for me,
6 out of 10.

Basically, The Dare is about two best friends: Erica and Bryn. They did absolutely everything together just like all normal best friends do. Except one night, they were partying and drinking and Erica got dared to jump into the water. Being the best friend that she is, Bryn decides to do it too. So they jump into the water, but Erica is nowhere to be seen afterwards. Only Bryn comes back up to the surface and is still alive. Nobody knows where Erica is, because her body couldn't be found anywhere.

Though the synopsis for this book makes it seem like a super creepy suspenseful thriller, I didn't exactly find this book to be all that suspenseful or thrilling at all. I mean yeah, the whole "I survived but my best friend didn't and now is nowhere to be found" does seem kind of creepy at times, but it didn't get so creepy that it gave me goosebumps and chills going up my spine.

Even though it wasn't all that thrilling, I was definitely really into the whole story line. I actually finished this book in a day, which doesn't happen all that often for me. Reading a book will usually take me a day or two, sometimes even a week, but I was just emotionally invested. I think this book would be perfect for fans of Pretty Little Liars.

I found this book to be okay. I didn't not dislike it or anything but I didn't love it. It's worth the read if you're looking for a quick mystery book, because the mystery definitely kept me interested. I wanted to know what happened to Erica and everything, which kept me reading the book and flipping the pages. I have heard really great things about Hannah Jayne's other novels, so I may have to check them out for more mystery reads.
