Giangreco's latest book is a visually stunning, comprehensive history of the U. S. Army that is much more than merely another 'coffee table' book. Containing 180,000 words of well-researched narrative, it is a useful reference (and a revealing read) on the history of America's oldest military service. I highly recommend this latest book from the acclaimed, Moncado Prize-winning author of 'Hell to Pay' and 'The Soldier from Independence.'

In the introduction Mr. Giangreco states that the secret of the Army's success is...its "soul"--an intangible flame called esprit de corps. But esprit de corps only goes so far. The Army is affected by the character of the nation and the will of the people to resist. However, as it always has done, the Army perseveres and does its duty while upholding the ideals of the founding fathers. The story of the U.S. Army is the really about the soldier using more than 1400 illustrations of uniforms, insignia, maps, portraits, weapons, and more. (p. 10)
The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, Pennsylvania was created to "Tell the Army Story...one soldier at a time." Mr. Giangreco's book, with its stories of soldiers, seems to be the perfect complement to USAHEC. The author tells the Army story primarily through illustrations showing its soldiers and the weapons, maps, and artifacts they used, tying it all together with brief narratives. Although some of the illustrations are familiar to us, the author has put considerable effort into finding fresh material to illustrate his book.
The Saratoga story (pp. 30-33) includes seven illustrations, including paintings of the battle and the surrender. To illustrate this story further Mr. Giangreco has overlain the painting of the surrender ceremony with a photo of the sword British General John Burgoyne is seen giving the American General Horatio Gates. The author also has added a photo of a military fife used in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, identifying the soldiers that used it in the caption.
This theme is carried on throughout the book. Wherever possible, the author has identified the soldier that used the items, such as the Bible on page 129.

It's nearly an impossible task to cover the entire history of the United States Army from its humble beginnings in 1607 to the present (2011) and call it a definitive history, but somehow D. M. Giangreco has managed to do it. Of course it took a massive book of 11.4 x 9.8 x 1.4 inches and 528 pages do it in, and it's fully illustrated too!

Each chapter of Mr. Giangreco's "The Definitive Illustrated History" covers specific a period of the Army's History:

* Creating a Continental Army, 1607-1782
* The Army and the Young Republic, 1794-1848
* Regulars, Volunteers and Civil War, 1861-1865
* War on the Plains and Domestic Strife, 1865-1878
* Beyond the Borders, The Far East, Caribbean and Mexico, 1877-1917
* Over There, 1917-1921
* Between Two Wars, 1919-1941
* Victory in the Pacific, 1941-1945
* Defeating Nazi Germany, 1942-1945
* The Cold War Turns Hot, 1945-1953
* Preparing for the "Next War" and Vietnam, 1953-1973
* The Volunteer Army, Panama, and the Persian Gulf, 1972-1991
* A "New" Enemy, 1991-2011

Of course even for a book of its size it would be impossible for it to be an in depth study spanning every phase of the United States Army's four hundred year history. That would take multiple volumes and span several feet of valuable shelf space. Mr. Giangreco takes a "skirt-length" approach to each of his chapters: short enough to keep it interesting, but long enough to adequately cover the subject.

Also included are four Appendices:
* Appendix A: Medals and Decorations; Ribbon-Only Awards; Unit Commendations and Foreign Citations.
* Appendix B: Campaign Streamers; Chiefs of Staff of the U. S. Army
* Appendix C: Branches of the U. S.

"United States Army: The Definitive Illustrated History" is a visually stunning masterpiece that captures the essence of America's Army.

Giangreco traces the roots of the Army back to the American Revolution. He does a masterful job weaving snippets of major battles, technology, and organization along with period artwork and photographs as illustrations. He also added citations and photographs for notable Medal of Honor winners.

I cannot rave enough about the quality artwork that he found for the book. This book is a must-have for any person who loves the United States Army.

I initially bought this book for my grandsons as a gift. After it was delivered I leafed through it and immediately ordered myself a copy. It is a substantial and fascinating read. I haven't been able to put it down for very long since I got it. It is beautifully illustrated and the text is highly informative and very well written. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in military or U.S. history.
